DEVELOPING STORY: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Friday endorsed businessman Donald Trump for the Republican nomination for president, becoming the New York billionaire’s most noteworthy endorsement to date.
The endorsement was announced at a news conference in Fort Worth, Texas.
“We don’t need any more of these Washington, D.C. acts," Christie said."We don’t need Washington politicians to come in and fix it."
Christie used the platform to both endorse Trump and attack Marco Rubio for what he sees as the freshman senator's lack of experience.
Christie said no other candidate is better prepared to provide the United States with strong leadership both at home and around the world. He also said that no other Republican candidate is a more formidable challenger to Hillary Clinton.
“I can guarantee you that the one person that Bill and Hillary don’t want to see on that stage in November is Donald Trump,” Christie said.
Christie's endorsement comes the day after a heated Republican debate where both Sens. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz attacked Trump.
Both Rubio and Cruz fought hard to throw Trump off his stride as the field charges into the all-important Super Tuesday contests. Rubio, in particular, was unrelenting in keeping the pressure on Trump Thursday night, going so far as to claim if Trump hadn’t inherited money he’d be “selling watches in Manhattan.”
Christie attacked Rubio at the final Republican debate before the New Hampshire primary, tripping up Rubio in a moment that likely contributed to his poor performance in the state's primary. Christie accused him of parroting the same talking points repeatedly and said a president should be able to think on his feet.
The endorsement from Christie comes the day after Rubio changed tactics in Thursday's GOP debate and began to attack Trump on a variety of fronts, from his business background to his preparedness to lead the nation. Rubio continued on Friday morning, calling Trump "a con artist" during a round of morning television interviews.
Trump says Rubio is a "desperate guy" and said, "I don't think he's of presidential caliber."
The announcement comes days before the pivotal Super Tuesday primaries and caucuses.
“I will lend my support between now and November in every way possible,” Christie said.
Christie said he was not offered any position by Trump and intends to serve out the remainder of his governorship in New Jersey and eventually work in the private sector with the hopes of one day making more money than his wife, who works as an investment banker.
A senior adviser to Rubio is interpreting Christie's endorsement as a remedy to what he calls the billionaire's inability to articulate his policy plans, explain why he won't release his tax returns and defend his past financial dealings.
Todd Harris told reporters traveling with the Florida senator that, "Donald Trump can't put a coherent noun and verb together to explain any of these things, so he had to bring in someone like Chris Christie to try to do it for him. And Chris Christie has got his work cut out for him."
Clinton, for her part, said she is eager to debate any Republican on economics and health care policy.
Campaigning Friday at Atlanta City Hall, Clinton talked about the job growth that took place during the administrations of her husband and President Obama.
She compared that to "trickle-down economics" of Republican administrations. And she mocked Republicans for voting repeatedly in Congress to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
She says "they never really tell you what they're going to put in its place," because "they know we won't like it."

I love this, props to Chris Christie for manning up, it takes a lot of courage to endorse someone you have lost to. Trump isn't going anywhere people need to face the facts, Trump has won the last every state that voted except the first one Iowa. What people need to do is face the facts, hes here and he isn't going anywhere. The nomination is going to be Hillary, sad to say and I believe for republican it'll be one of these three, Trump, Cruz, or Rubio, the rest don't have what it takes they might get close but one of those three will be the Republican nominee. Trump has shown that he is in that he is a candidate, and soon we'll know who is going to be the nominee with the Super Tuesday coming, which I believe is when ten states will be voting. Trump may not be the best, cause Im not gonna sit here and tell you hes perfect, but hes has some good ideas and hes not Politically Correct which I love, this country is going down the toilet, everything you say offends someone now. I while back I saw a cool picture, if you guys dont know Dan Bilzerian, hes a sick guy who lives life to fullest. Bilzerain has more guns then I can dream of and goes to the best places in world, but there was a picture of him and Donald Trump hanging out and the caption was hes not Politically Correct, Dont know why but thought it was cool. Back to why I think Trump isn't that bad, which Im talking about because theres a good chance the nominations are gonna be Trump and Hillary. If it comes down to this then your gonna have to vote for a person who just is a teller of tales, she has lied so much, I think she should of been prosecuted or kicked out of the race for her email controversy, where she released confidential information. This is not a sign of leadership, now I aint saying Trump is is, but hes not as bad as Hillary, he tells it straight up and truth, while Hillary tells her lies. Trump never been caught for lying, when multiple times Hillary has. Trump is just a straight forward kind of person too, but theres people who say if comes down to Trump and Hillary they wont even vote, now this is just ridiculous, come on, this is just a sign of stubbornness, there's always going to hard decisions to make in life, because that is what life is about.

I like the fact that Chris Christie endorsed Trump because I feel Trump will make America great again. Trump is the only Republican that can beat Hillary or Sanders and I would leave California and move to Texas and hope it secedes from the union if one of them became our president.Trump is our last chance to save America and its interests.
ReplyDeleteI really dislike all the canidites right now. I feel as though they're all extremely immature, and NONE are fit to run our country. I'd honestly be terrified for whoever gets into office, because i believe all of them will only ruin our country more. They'd all be taking America steps back, especially with social issues such as racism and prejudice. It's all just going to blow up again. As a mixed race person with family who are muslim, i'd honestly be scared for their lives if donald came into presidency due to the horrific, and racially biased things he proposes. All of the candidates really are terrible and immature and I wish America could have someone to come into office who will actually make a positive change. "Rubio, in particular, was unrelenting in keeping the pressure on Trump Thursday night, going so far as to claim if Trump hadn’t inherited money he’d be “selling watches in Manhattan"(fox news) this is just proof that all the candidates are terrible, not just trump. They're all extremely immature in their campaigns; trump throwing childish hissy fits and claiming lies about the other candidates especially, but this just show's that all their campaigns aren't based about actually making America the great country it CAN be, but just trying to win with immature lies and fights. It's like watching elementary school children run for president, and it's extremely sad. I can't wait to move out of the U.S., no matter who gets elected.
ReplyDeleteI am very disappointed in all the candidates right now. The only thing I know is who I definately don't want to win, but can't answer who. Also, didn't Christie target Trump earlier on in the election? He is just jumping onto the bandwagon and following Trump because he believes that Trump has enough support to pull off a win.
ReplyDeleteThe Presidential candidates this term are all very scattered across the map. From Bernie Sanders to Donald Trump this Presidential race is very different. Many of the candidates just attack each other and do not show professionalism. Trump is a very successful business man but I do not believe his mindset is fit to run the country. His mannerisms and speech towards other candidates and other humans can be very direct and rude. The fact that Trump is being endorsed is bound to happen, for example this article stating how Christie's endorsement was announced. The Presidential race this term will be more and more vigorous as we get down to the final candidates. Endorsements from others in high positions will help to boost the candidates and their stance and campaigns. Gabi LaBeaux p.6
ReplyDeleteThe enemy of my enemy is my friend. It seems as though Christie really doesn't want the Democrats to win, and he is simply supporting who he sees as most fit to become president. “We don’t need any more of these Washington, D.C. acts," Christie said."We don’t need Washington politicians to come in and fix it"(Christie). Looking at this, it seems the reason Christie chose Trump is because he is not a politician.
ReplyDeleteI am very excited to see who will win because I have never been interested in who will run, nor did I care. But this year has really gotten everyone's attention with the candidates. It seems like Christie is on Trumps side, he is only going after Rubio, only accusing him but not Trump. "Christie accused him of parroting the same talking points repeatedly and said a president should be able to think on his feet"(Christie).

I dislike all the candidates right now. It boggles my mind what the future will bring; no candidate in my opinion is fit to be the president. The immaturity and unprofessional behavior displayed is disturbing, and it really does scare me about how our lives are going to change.

i agree with hanna that it seems that all the presidents are just trying to boost there egos and their rank instead of focusing on what the american people need

In my opinion, I dislike all the candidates because all of them are really immature and I'm afraid that they will make our country worse. I'm surprised and curious to see who will win to become president. I feel like lately, Trump has been harsh on all the people because he makes fun of the people and shows racism towards them. I wonder what the future will bring when someone wins and hope they will be able to run this country well.
ReplyDeleteI dislike all of the candidates except for Donald Trump. He is not afraid to say anything to anyone. He also says exactly what the people want to hear. Although many people don't like him, including his fellow candidates. “I can guarantee you that the one person that Bill and Hillary don’t want to see on that stage in November is Donald Trump,” Christie said. Nobody has a chance against Trump because everybody likes his sense of humor and how he says he want's to build a bigger and better wall so no illegal immigrants can come in. Although, they are all very immature. "Christie attacked Rubio at the final Republican debate before the New Hampshire primary, tripping up Rubio in a moment that likely contributed to his poor performance in the state's primary. Christie accused him of parroting the same talking points repeatedly and said a president should be able to think on his feet." (Christie) All they pretty much do is point fingers at each other and try to make the United States dislike that candidate.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I don't think Donald Trump would make a good president, but I think out of all the candidates that he is the strongest. Christie did what he thought was best I think and that's why he endorsed Trump. I think Trump isn't mature enough to be the president and he will make a lot of mistakes. I also think that the rest of the candidates for president aren't right to be president because none of them seem like they are fit right now to be president.

As the political race begins to narrow down, the competition seems to get even more intense. However, as Trump continues to grow in popularity he gets more and more attacked by his fellow competitors. In this scenario the contrary occurs, because Christie supports Trump while using it as and opportunity to attack Rubio. "Christie used the platform to both endorse Trump and attack Marco Rubio for what he sees as the freshman senator's lack of experience" (Fox News). The battle and attacks between each of the candidates only makes the Republican Party weaker. I believe Christie is on the right track by supporting his fellow Republicans, therefore strengthening the party.

I respect Chris Christie for accepting the fact that he was going to lose, and endorsing one of the people that beat him. That takes guts and I respect that he isn't ego-centric. It does not surprise me that he chose Trump, either. They are both notorious for saying whatever their opinion is and not having a filter. I think the fact that they aren't very PC is just what the country needs. Christie supporting Trump doesn't surprise me one bit. Kudos to Christie for putting his own campaign aside and doing what he thinks is best.

DeleteI think it's very deserving of respect that Christie is supporting a candidate he just spent time running against. It's a very admirable. I'm curious as to see how far this endorsement goes. I am intrigued to see if the people who were going to vote for Christie will now vote for Trump. -Sabrina Shaw
ReplyDeleteFor this year i really do believe that we do not have 1 candidate that is fit for president for the united states of america. It seems that becoming president isn't just about making the lives of the people better it almost seems that its all for fame and wanting to be the most popular person on the planet.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we have one good candidate for president this year. I respect Christie for knowing that he will lose. She is supporting someone and not against someone. I could totally see Christie supporting trump.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand how anyone can support a candidate who doesn't care for the well being of the nation. So far, Trump has done very little to appeal to every group of the nation. He only has popularity because of his previous job. I feel that this presidential election is pretty much a reality show and no one is truly appealing toward issues that matter. I don't understand how Trump is still in the presidential run. I hope that Trump doesn't become our president, if he does, I will revoke my college acceptance letter and attempt to go study abroad until his term is over.
ReplyDeleteChristie endorsing Donald Trump was a very smart decision. Trump will most likely be the republican candidate and therefore that was a very good decision. I agree with the people above that support Trump.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brady. I like Donald Trump. Obviously a lot of other people do too since he is doing pretty well. I will be able to vote in the Presidential election and if Trump is the republican candidate then I am voting for him. It is good that Christie supports him.
ReplyDeleteThis presidential race has produced the most ridiculous candidates of all time. Our forefathers are rolling in their graves. It's pretty frustrating that we have to essentially choose from the lesser of evils. I wish we could have someone who more accurately represents the ideals and beliefs of our country. Instead we have a bunch of man-children and a woman who prioritizes lies and deceit over anything else. "Both Rubio and Cruz fought hard to throw Trump off his stride as the field charges into the all-important Super Tuesday contests. Rubio, in particular, was unrelenting in keeping the pressure on Trump Thursday night, going so far as to claim if Trump hadn’t inherited money he’d be “selling watches in Manhattan.”" Instead of focusing on the issues that our nation is dealing with, they are calling names like they're toddlers fighting over a toy.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I don't really like Trump and his ideas, I do feel like Christie's endorsment was put to good use. Trump has many of the voters on his side. I respect Chris Christie for endorsing Trump and I feel like it was a smart decision. I do not believe that Trump would make a good president but out of all the canditates I think he is the strongest next to Cruz.

Trump is most likely going to win the Republican candidate and Christie could be doing it for attention or wanted to become Vice President. Either way, Trump is a joke compared to other candidates and gets his money and attention from his previous jobs.

ReplyDeleteI think that there is not one good candidate running for president this year. I think that Donald Trump is the strongest running for president and I think it was smart of Christie to endorse him.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kaci Pebley there is not a huge awesome president that i love running for president this year.Although Donald Trump has been doing a good job as explaining to us what he will do and how he will get it done."no other candidate is better prepared to provide the United States with strong leadership"(Fox News).
