How Zika Virus Can Spread
BY CAROLYN KORMANN
When Andrew Haddow was a boy, in the nineteen-eighties, his father told him bedtime stories about his grandfather, a Scottish scientist named Alexander John Haddow, who studied rare viruses in the jungle outside Entebbe, Uganda. As Haddow got older, he began reading his grandfather’s papers. One of them was about the discovery, in 1947, of a virus in the blood of a rhesus monkey that lived in the Zika Forest. This virus—which, like dengue fever and yellow fever, is transmitted to humans mostly by mosquitoes—remained virtually unknown for the next sixty years, but it interested Haddow. In 2012, Haddow, now a medical entomologist, published a paper on the genetic lineage of the Zika virus. Haddow identified two points of origin—one African, the other Asian—and showed that a recent outbreak on the island of Yap, in the Federated States of Micronesia, had been caused by the latter strain. His paper also warned that Zika might spread.
Today, in much of Latin America, Haddow’s prediction has become a frightening reality. The World Health Organization estimates that the virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months; on Monday, it declared the outbreak a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern,” a designation that has rarely been applied in the past, and is intended to coördinate international funds and expertise. Fortunately, the majority of people who catch Zika (perhaps eighty per cent) will experience no symptoms. But what no one, including Haddow, foresaw was the apparent, though still unproven, link between the virus and microcephaly, a condition that causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads and, in most cases, irreversible brain damage. In Brazil, where the virus was first reported in May, health officials have implicated Zika in thirty-seven hundred new cases of microcephaly. (Fewer than a hundred and fifty cases surfaced in 2014.) Some epidemiologists have said that the virus’s invisibility makes it more dangerous; a pregnant woman might not know that she has contracted it.
Although mosquitoes are responsible for the great majority of transmissions, Haddow helped to discover that the virus can also be sexually communicated. In 2009, during a field study in Senegal, he met another medical entomologist, Kevin Kobylinski, who was conducting malaria research. They went out for beers, and Kobylinski described a mysterious illness—rash, extreme fatigue, joint pain, blood in his semen—that had plagued both him and a colleague, Brian Foy, after a trip to the country the previous year. Foy’s wife, who had not been to Senegal, had also become ill, nine days after his return to the United States. Haddow immediately suspected Zika. Kobylinski sent him blood samples, which proved that the diagnosis was correct. In 2011, they co-authored a paper in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases suggesting, based on circumstantial evidence, that Foy had unwittingly infected his wife with Zika. Foy also proposed that sexual transmissions might have contributed to the outbreak on Yap, which touched seventy-three per cent of the island’s population.
Meanwhile, Zika had been travelling east. In 2013 and 2014, French Polynesia experienced a large outbreak. The virus had hopscotched across the South Pacific—the Cook Islands, New Caledonia, Easter Island. In each place, local mosquitoes likely fed on the Zika-infected blood of travellers. Then, in August of 2014, according to Didier Musso, a French scientist based in Tahiti, teams from those South Pacific island groups competed in a canoe race, the Va’a World Sprint Championship, which was held in Rio de Janeiro.
Now the virus has spread to more than twenty countries in the Americas. It’s coming our way. So far, thirty-six Americans, including four pregnant women and five New Yorkers, are reported to have contracted the disease, all while travelling outside the country. Air-conditioning, screened windows, and modern plumbing will most likely prevent Zika from spreading too readily here. The same cannot be said of Brazil, or Colombia, or El Salvador. It’s the rainy season in much of Latin America, and the mosquito population in cities is at its festering peak. Brazil has deployed two hundred thousand troops to reduce the numbers of bugs, an effort that promises to be about as effective as using a colander to remove salt from the sea. Colombia’s national health institute reported that twenty-one hundred pregnant women have contracted the Zika virus. In El Salvador, the government recently announced that women should not get pregnant until 2018—despite the fact that abortion is illegal there and contraceptives are difficult to find.
Viral epidemics like this one are not just the result of human encroachment on the jungles of Uganda, or of teams of travelling canoeists from the South Pacific, or even, simply, of globalization. Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that is largely responsible for transmitting pathogens such as Zika and dengue, thrives in the warm, humid, increasingly dense urban centers of Latin America, and climate change has been making these places warmer and wetter. According to a report by the World Health Organization, dengue infected people thirty times more frequently in 2013 than it did in the nineteen-sixties, making it the planet’s most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne virus. The International Panel on Climate Change recently projected that “the area of the planet that was climatically suitable for dengue would increase under most scenarios.”
One way to combat Zika might be to target the DNA of the Aedes mosquito. This method has been attempted before, as Michael Specter reported in the magazine in 2012. Researchers breed a strain of male Aedes with a single modified gene, which programs its offspring for self-destruction. The mutant males are released into the wild, where they mate with females, fertilizing their eggs; after the eggs hatch into larvae, they die. In field studies conducted in the Cayman Islands, Panama, and Brazil, the genetically modified Aedes was able to reduce the wild-mosquito population by ninety per cent, cutting down significantly on transmission rates at the same time.
Last year, Brazil’s National Biosafety Technical Commission awarded Oxitec, the company that invented and developed the mutant Aedes, a license to release it anywhere in the country. In April, Oxitec began its “friendly Aedes aegyptiprogram” in partnership with the city of Piracicaba, in southeast Brazil. The local government chose to roll out the program in a neighborhood with a high level of dengue infection. (Zika was still largely unknown.) White vans now cruise its streets, releasing up to eight hundred thousand male mosquitoes a week. According to the latest data, the “friendly” insects have reduced the wildAedes population by eighty-two per cent.
In September, as reported Zika cases were multiplying, a biotech corporation called Intrexon bought Oxitec. On January 19th, Intrexon announced plans to expand Oxitec’s Aedes program in Piracicaba, and to build a new mosquito-making factory in the city that will be thirty times larger than its existing plant. This may be only the beginning. “We’ll be growing a lot faster in the next six months,” Glen Slade, Oxitec’s head of business development, told me on Friday. “We’re having conversations in Mexico, as we are in many other countries. We’ve had significant interest from a lot of other Brazilian municipalities as well.” The company is waiting for Brazil to approve its application for a license that will allow it to sell its mosquitoes commercially. Slade said the company didn’t know yet what it would charge. Late last week, Intrexon’s stock spiked by twenty-four per cent.

I think that this is a very scary current event. Just the shear number of people that could be infected in the upcoming months is enough to scare anybody. "The virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months,"(How Zika Virus can Spread). This story, just in general sounds like something out of a nightmare. I just hope that the plans in action to stop the spread of this awful virus succeed. -Truman Andrus Period 6.
ReplyDeleteThis virus is extremely scary and deserves the attention of everyone. The scariest part is how fast the virus can really spread, leaving everyone sustainable."The virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months,"(Carolyn Kormann) I think everyone should be aware of this to take measures in stopping the spread of this virus.
ReplyDeleteI found it interesting how a mosquito spread disease is fixed by sending out "friendly" genetically modified mosquitoes. The symptoms of zika,"rash, extreme fatigue, joint pain, blood in [his] semen"(How Zika Virus can Spread) is very similar to the symptoms found in chikungunya, a different disease found in Central America. Chikungunya is also a mosquito spread disease, but is more contained and localized in Central America. Now that zika has spread to more areas in the world, would that affect the spread of chikungunya? I hope that it doesn't and that zika won't be spread too much into the United States. -JoJo Wu 6th period

ReplyDeleteThis virus is extremely scary for anyone! This virus will be a big outbreak soon and could “infect as many as four hundred million people in the upcoming months” (Kormann). You can catch this from being in contact with mosquitos, then transferring it to other people. This virus is very scary and left untreated it can have irreversible brain damage.

I find it really scary and disgusting that a disease like this could spread so much is such little time. It is said that, "now the virus has spread to more than twenty countries in [America]" (How Zika Virus Can Spread), and it’s coming our way. There are 36 Americans who have been contracted with the disease so far and i think this disease is something that should be at the attention of everybody from preventing this disease from spreading any longer.
ReplyDeleteI find the news of this virus really frightening! The fact that this plague could "infect as many as four hundred million people" is eye opening. If gone without treatment or awareness, the virus can get to even more people, leaving them with unpleasant effects. I think that an outbreak like this should have been taken care of earlier to prevent others from being infected.

ReplyDelete"The World Health Organization estimates that the virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months"(Kormann). The rapid spread of this virus is crazy! The Zika virus has reached over 29 countries and is continuing to spread at a faster pace. Almost 80% of the people that contract Zika will not experience any symptoms, however their offspring will. It is extremely heartbreaking to see that a mother can not protect her unborn baby from something she personally contracted. It is good to see that some necessary advances are being made, however this should have been taken care of a long time ago.

This event is incredibly scary the amount of people that could be killed by this diesies is huge and the fact that it would be so hard to stop is also very scary the virus could infect up to four million in the coming months and would kill without being able to stop it.
ReplyDeleteThe disease happens to be a very fast spreading disease. This can harm many types of people in ways including travel, or staying in hotels where there is a chance of someone getting a disease like this. In case you get this disease look up the symptoms to see if u need to be checked by a doctor.
ReplyDeleteThis virus is for sure a very scary thing. It is a very fast spreading and dangerous disease and one of the worst things about it is you could not even know you had it but be pregnant and get you baby infected "Fortunately, the majority of people who catch Zika (perhaps eighty per cent) will experience no symptoms. But what no one, including Haddow, foresaw was the apparent, though still unproven, link between the virus and microcephaly, a condition that causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads and, in most cases, irreversible brain damage."
ReplyDeleteThis Zika Virus is a very serious issue that needs to be taken care of. "Some epidemiologists have said that the virus’s invisibility makes it more dangerous; a pregnant woman might not know that she has contracted it"(Kormann). The Zika Virus being invisible makes it 10 times worse. Also the fact how fast it can spread to so many people in a matter of months! "The virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months"(Kormann). I just hope all the work they put into stopping this awful virus will succeed.
ReplyDeleteThe Zika Virus is a very dangerous disease and should be dealt with immediately. The disease is already very bad but the fact that it can be pretty much invisible makes it even worse. Most mothers won't even know they have it and that can cause the disease to spread rapidly if people don't know they have it. This disease is very serious and I hope all goes well in the work being put to stop it.

This disease is very scary, given the fact that it goes undetected in its carriers, unless the person is pregnant, leading to very traumatic birth defects, including abnormally small heads."The World Health Organization estimates that the virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months"(Kormann). The possibility of the Zika virus infecting four million people in the coming months is very unnerving. The precautions to prevent this virus from spreading any further should definitely be taken.
ReplyDeleteThe speed in which this disease is spreading is truly terrifying. It is also just as terrifying that this disease has gone unheard of for so long. Most of us hadn't heard of this disease up until these past few months. It is very intimidating that "The virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months,"(Kormann). We should defenitely take all precautions possible in order to slow or stop the spread of this dangerous disease.

Honestly this Zika Virus seems pretty scary and life threatening to humans. But I don't think that many developed countries(1st world countries) have as much to worry about compared to third world countries. The article states,"The World Health Organization estimates that the virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months." That's horrific to think of but it's reality. When a virus/disease hits people are going to die before doctors can find a cure. I think that someone will eventually find a cure for the virus and let's hope it'soon.
ReplyDeleteI think the Zika is a very scary disease. The fact that it is somewhat new and we know very little about it is even scarier. My soccer coach left for Brazil this week and we all joked around and told him not to get the Zika virus; after reading this, I realize how serious it actually is. But I do believe that the U.S. doesnt need to be as worried because as Carolyn Korman stated, "Air-conditioning, screened windows, and modern plumbing will most likely prevent Zika from spreading too readily here"(Korman). I think if this disease spreads more, it can be very dangerous to the population because this disease greatly effects unborn babies. Hopefully, this NASTY disease can be stopped before it greatly effects our world.
ReplyDelete"In El Salvador, the government recently announced that women should not get pregnant until 2018—despite the fact that abortion is illegal there and contraceptives are difficult to find." I think it's extremely unfair for El Salvador to tell women to simply "not get pregnant" when they do not provide necessary access to contraceptives. I'm sure condoms are much easier to find and afford than birth control or other methods, so perhaps the focus should be more directed towards men for prevention. This virus is particularly frightening because, regardless of aversion, it is unlikely contamination will cease until a cure or vaccine is discovered.
ReplyDeleteThis whole new epidemic of a major disease outbreak is very real and scary. Even though it is new, we must continue to fight, persevere, and find a cure for the disease. I do not understand why if someone discovered it so long ago and they wouldn't tell anyone about it. "One of them was about the discovery, in 1947, of a virus in the blood of a rhesus monkey that lived in the Zika Forest" (How a Virus Can Spread, Kormann).

The virus is mostly transmitted through mosquitoes bites and the speed of it spreading is dangerous. The repulsive Zika disease is a fear to many in South America. Some of the symptoms of zika include"rash, extreme fatigue, joint pain, blood in [his] semen"."The World Health Organization estimates that the virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months"(Kormann). The rapid spread of this virus is terrifying. The Zika virus has reached over 29 countries and is continuing to spread at a faster pace. About 80% of the people that contract the Zika virus will not experience any symptoms, but their offspring will. It is vital and a good step to see advances are being made such as the genetically modified mosquitos. With the technology and medical advances that the world contains the correct procedures should begin to develop to rid the disease. Gabi LaBeaux p.6
ReplyDeleteI find it more than just a little terrifying that this has been around for such a long time and few people neglected to look more into it. With how fast this disease is spreading, and with how harmful the effects which can cause "babies to be born with abnormally small heads and, in most cases, irreversible brain damage."(Kormann), I think that more focus should be put on this, especially now that it's touched down within our borders.
ReplyDeleteThis virus is very dangerous and deserves the attention of everyone. ReplyDeleteThis is a very scary event. Just the amount of people that could be infected by this is frighting. "The virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months,"(How Zika Virus can Spread). This virus is awful. It could end the human race. ReplyDeleteThis virus is a very scary situation that needs to be gotten rid of. If a virus can spread this quickly up to "4 million people in the coming months"(How the Zinca Virus Can Spread), then it deserves extra attention and care to make sure this hits as little people as possible. I think that this virus needs to be taken care of immediately. The fact that if only one person gets it, it can automatically spread to several other people. We don't need everyone in the world becoming sick all of a sudden from just one bug. We definitely need to take control and figure out a way to either have it completely gone or to at least have a back up plan if it does erupt into something big.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing that it has taken this long to become aware of the disease. And now that we are aware scientists need to find a vaccine immediately. This disease could get out of hand very easily and if it does it could be a large problem for the population as it effect unborn babies.
ReplyDeleteI think that the virus is a really scary thought considering that it is now just being acknowledged now that it is spread so far. I think that this could quickly become something really dangerous to all people and something to prevent this from worsening. We don't want people to continue being infected by this for any longer. I'm really surprised that it is just now being brought to attention.

ReplyDeleteThe scary thing about the disease is how fast it can spread. This is a serious threat that needs to be dealt with immediately. " The World Health Organization estimates that the virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months(Kormann)." keeping something of this magnitude under control is a top priority
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article, I'm happy that this topic is on the current events, because not a lot of people know about this virus and should be aware of it. One quote in the article that stills scares me about this virus is "The World Health Organization estimates that the virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months"(Carolyn Kormann) it's really insane how this virus could affect so many people really quickly in months. Another thing that also scares me is this virus can spread not by mosquitoes but also by sexually communicated. I looked more into Zika's information and unfortunately there is no cure. Although I hope they can find a cure soon.
ReplyDeleteThe things we can genetically engineer astonishes me. Not only can we make quicker growing food, but we can no make self destructing misquotes?! I really find the concept interesting and wonder if it could be applied to other situations. I hope this outbreak does not become an epidemic, and that scientists manage to get it under control.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is super important for us to find a cure for this disease. If "the virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months"(The World Health Organization), it should be something that is talked about more too. My friends and I actually talk about current events and politics a lot, admittedly way more than 16 year old girls should, and I hadn't heard about this until now. If something that can kill off this many people is actually out there and it's coming people should talk about it in the news. I also think that it's super weird that all these weird diseases have been popping up lately, there was ebola a year or two ago and now there's this. Hopefully scientists can find a cure or a vaccine or something before people start dying.
ReplyDeleteThis disease is incredible dangerous and does not get the attention that it needs to be expose. "The World Health Organization estimates that the virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months." (Kormann). This is a giant number of people who most likely don't even know that this disease exists. The Zika virus is too dangerous to go unanounced to the public. ReplyDeleteI believe the Zika virus is a serious virus that needs to be stopped. We should try many different ways to try to stop the spread of the virus before it gets out of hand. Newtons third law states that every action has a reaction. This is very true here. Since the start of grade school we have learned all about the food web and how removing one organism can have huge side effects. Although there may be a virus spreading, completely mutating a whole species of bugs might not be the right way to go. The fact that we have"reduced the wild-mosquito population by ninety per cent" (Virus) is not a good sign. We need to stop this disease but altering nature may be the wrong direction to go. In the end, we hope that scientists have ensured that breeding these mosquitos will not have horrible side effects, and if altering an ecosystem to save human lives is necessary i doubt anyone has any objections.
ReplyDeleteAmar I agree with what you are saying 100%. When "reducing the mosquito population by 90%" (virus) that is not a good thing. I think going the "mutating" route is not the best way for this. Taking one thing out of whatever food chain can lead to bigger and longer lasting affects. But if that is what is necessary I know nobody would disagree as it is saving humans lives instead of the bugs' lives, so therefore no matter the side effects the ecosystem will probably be altered.

The Zika virus is clearly a disease that spreads at such a rapid rate, that we have no control over what it will do to everyone. As stated by Carolyn Kormann, "the planet’s most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne virus", which is saying something huge. This is something that needs to be handled quickly. Since the spread is happening so fast, it makes containing it difficult, and the release of the modified mosquito is a genius way to reduce the spreading, but it isn't the fastest method. And while it is a worldwide epidemic, I'm not too worried about it. It isn't some deadly virus like Malaria or anything like that so I'm not seeing a reason for extreme panic."...though still unproven, link between the virus and microcephaly..."(Kormann) While yes, there is reasonable evidence to prove that Zika leads to microcephaly, it still hasn't been proven. And if it is proven, then we need to come up with a vaccine, which said by many articles, shouldn't be too difficult. I think that while yes, it is a problem, a lot of people are just blowing it out of proportion.
ReplyDeleteThe disease is horrifying and the fact that is spreading so quickly makes it absolutely bone chilling. Releasing those friendly mosquitos is amazing though. Being able to come up with the idea to make these bugs is absolutely nobel worthy in my opinion. The other thing that would be good to focus on is the fact that they said: "...climate change has been making these places warmer and wetter." This relates back to global warming and how we should be finding a way to stop that. It needs to be more under control so these new threats don't start flooding us.

When I was reading this article,it was very interesting and scary to learn how fast a virus like that can spread to other countries, and cause babies to have abnormally small heads and in most cases irreversible brain damage. It is a scary virus and I hope the research companies can find a way to stop the spread of this virus.
ReplyDeleteThis disease seems to be spreading faster than Usain Bolt and is really terrifying to think about how it can kill you slowly or quickly. Most of us in the US hadn't heard of the virus until it became a world wide problem and it seems to be putting fear into everyone in the US. As the article states,"The virus could infect as many as four million people in the coming months,"(Kormann). It's pretty scary to think that it could spread across the US like wildfire, let's hope someone come up with a cure and it doesn't spread to the United States.
