One cold Monday this month, all the students of Park Ridge High School stayed home: wearing their PJs, munching on pretzels and Oreos, hanging out on the couch.
It wasn't a snow day or measles epidemic. It was the school's first Virtual Day, where in-person classes were replaced with written lessons and real-time video chats delivered online.
The idea arose because the school, just north of New York City in Park Ridge, N.J., issued every student a Mac laptop last year, says Tina Bacolas, the school's head of instructional technology.
The school chose a software system called Schoology that allows students and teachers to communicate by text and video and post assignments.
"Once we had that up and running, the idea of a virtual school day was thrown out there" as a way of testing those capabilities, Bacolas told NPR Ed.
"Our ultimate goal is to prepare kids for life after high school," says principal Troy Lederman. "Most colleges say that kids should be taking at least one online course, and there's a lot of careers where people can work from home."
And then there's the added benefit of having a backup plan for the school in case of snow days or other emergencies.
In a video posted to YouTube the week before the experiment, students were all for it. "I'm excited because I'm going to take my laptop to Starbucks and do all my work while I enjoy a Frappucino," says a student in a cap and a hooded sweatshirt.
"I like to listen to music when I work and it helps me focus, so I think it will be really helpful," says a girl with a half-shaved head.
In student surveys taken after the event, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Virtual "attendance" was 98 percent for the day, better than a regular day.
Teachers, says Bacolas, were a bit less gung-ho. "We definitely have a population of teachers who are older, who were overly upset and cautious" about trying to teach through the platform alone. But 60 percent of teachers said the experiment pushed them to learn a new tech skill or software feature, and 70 percent used the day to introduce new material, not just review.
For this first-time experiment, teachers were required to come to school, and the building kept to the typical bell schedule, with virtual lessons held in real time.
About 50 students, or fewer than 10 percent of the student body, showed up. They told Bacolas that home wasn't a great place for them to learn because, among other reasons, "My baby brother is distracting"; "My mom has three dogs"; and, "I have soccer right after school so I might as well show up."
Nationwide, about 400,000 K-12 students are taking or have taken at least one fully online course, and far more schools are using platforms like Schoology to provide online assignments outside of traditional school hours. By and large the format seems to work well for students who use it as an occasional supplement, as Park Ridge High is doing — for example, to take an AP course that their school doesn't offer. Completely virtual schools, studies say, tend to have worse outcomes as a group.
Having a work-from-home day wouldn't work as well in some districts as it did in affluent Bergen County, where the principal said "99 percent" of students have high-speed Internet access at home.
A recent survey of low-income families with school-age kids by Rutgers University and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center found that nearly 1 in 4 relied on mobile phones only for Internet use at home.
Working from home also didn't work as well for a small number of students at Park Ridge: those who have special needs and require one-on-one, face-to-face support to stay on track.
The students' biggest request for the next Virtual Day was that the school take one step further into the world of telecommuting, by posting all the assignments at the beginning of the day and allowing students to truly go at their own pace — "showing up" only for the occasional real-time discussion.
To me I think that this is a good idea. It's a good idea because if the students can stay at home and just communicate with teachers online. It'll make it so much easier for the parents and the kids. They won't have to rush to get up in the morning and drive to school, they can just get up open the computer and start.
ReplyDeletePer.1
It seems that online instruction is beneficial in wealthier districts but should not totally replace face to face learning. If I was given this, I would likely do the work and lessons from classes that are relatively easy for me and somewhat avoid the more difficult classes. Using sites like schoology should only be a supplement and not the only platform. Overall the system would be very useful for snowdays and days that a person could not show up.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great idea that “allows students and teachers to communicate by text and video and post assignments” (NPR). Having this would create less hassle for students and parents in the morning, for example having to drive to school early, and worrying about everyone’s schedules for the day. It makes it so much simpler to just do your school work at home, because if you lose focus you can walk away from the computer for a second without disrupting the class.
ReplyDeleteMegan Welter Per. 2
I think they should not do it anymore. I feel that technology is taking to much control. It is also taking away communication in the process, what happened to talking with other students in the class? The only part I liked was, "I like to listen to music when I work and it helps me focus, so I think it will be really helpful"(NPR). I work better if I listen to music but this already happens in most of my classes.

I believe this is a really good idea. By having courses online people who are sick could still get the homework easily. "attendance" was 98 percent for the day, better than a regular day." Also headed in the way society is going, technology plays a huge role in our every day lives. Which by having homework online, it would be easy to access as well as improve attendance as the study showed.
ReplyDeleteZayne Beckman Per. 5
This idea “allows students and teachers to communicate by text and video and post assignments” (NPR). This will allow students the extra time to sleep instead of waking up early to get ready. It also allows a student to be in the comfort of their home or wherever they please to get their work done. Not only that, but it saves gas. If you are sick and have to be at home, at least you can attend your class. However, I do agree with Alayna Texley that communication with other students is important. Overall, I think this is a great idea and should at least have a trial run for all schools to try out.
ReplyDeleteOlivia Lasecke period 2
I agree with this because it is a good idea to have this because it would be helpful to the parents and kids. For example, if a student is sick, then they wouldn't be able to miss what is going on at school because they can open up a computer and stay caught up. This would also be a better idea because technology is playing a huge important role in this generation and will continue to and school's also want us to practice technology now for the future. The only downside to this is lack of communication with the world like talking to students in the class and sharing opinions or helping each other in class. Another thing is, you wouldn't have to worry about waking up really early and going to school and worrying about getting a ride. Brandon Marshall Period 4
ReplyDeleteI think this is a very good and advance idea. Technology is just getting better and used more and more everyday. By the time we are adults and have our careers technology will be running our life, so might as well get used to it now. Also this is how school will be when we have kids. It's great to start it now so we aren't so left out of what our kids do for their school work. If you do your work at home you can be more focused, relaxed, and prepared aswell. "In student surveys taken after the event, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Virtual "attendance" was 98 percent for the day, better than a regular day" also there was a very high attendance and very positive feed back. This is a great look at what school will turn into in the future
ReplyDelete"Our ultimate goal is to prepare kids for life after high school," says principal Troy Lederman. (NPR). This is a very good idea. This benefits the students and teachers. This is good because it helps the grades and attendance of students. If a student is sick, they can get he information from online. This benefits everyone, all schools should do this.
ReplyDeleteI think virtual schooling is a beneficial tool to students if it used at a regulated pace. The idea of children being able to take their learning into their own hands in an environment that they prefer is great, however there needs to be balance. Through trial and error the school system needs to find the right use of technology and face to face learning. This will help kids advance in both social skills and technology skills, rather than just one or the other. In the future, technology will take over everything and I believe it is better to teach young children without technology to prevent that advancement from happening to quickly. "Our ultimate goal is to prepare kids for life after high school"(NPR). Anything that prepares children for the future is beneficial to the public school system. However, the public school system needs to be careful and use trial and error to figure out what truly helps prepare kids for the future.

DeleteI too agree with the whole idea of balancing the use of technology and face to face learning. In my opinion children growing up should know how to communicate with someone directly rather than through a screen. I know if I was a mother I wouldn't want my kids to not have social skills. There definitely needs to be a balance between the two. Like Alexis said "I think virtual schooling is a beneficial tool to students if its used at a regulated pace." I also agree with that and think learning from home would be a new and good different way of learning.
DeleteThis is a great idea for many reasons. Students can still get the education that they would at school without having to attend school. Students can sleep in, ask questions by texting or emailing and not have to sit there bored for hours when they are not learning things. School days are long and with this online schooling, kids can have the freedom to take breaks and take segments out of the day to learn so it is equivalent to that of school. "In student surveys taken after the event, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Virtual "attendance" was 98 percent for the day, better than a regular day"(NPR).

This seems like a great idea to me. It's more of a one on one approach then having 40 kids in one classroom and a teacher trying to answer every single question for every single student. Learning like this seems to have more positives then negatives. High school kids seem to like this approach a lot more also as the article states,"In student surveys taken after the event, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Virtual "attendance" was 98 percent for the day, better than a regular day." I personally love this idea of virtual teaching and Oak Ridge should definitely consider it.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is a brilliant idea to be able to just stay home and practically do your homework online. The students will have ton worry no longer about having to dress up for school, wake up early, and pretty much what we do everyday. If kids can do their classes online, then more kids would actually do their work."In student surveys taken after the event, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Virtual "attendance" was 98 percent for the day, better than a regular day"(NPR). "I like to listen to music when I work and it helps me focus, so I think it will be really helpful," says a girl with a half-shaved head." The kids would now be able to do what they want, dress as they like and etc. The problem would be that teachers would lose their jobs. ""We definitely have a population of teachers who are older, who were overly upset and cautious" about trying to teach through the platform alone. ReplyDeleteThis idea has many different pros and cons to it. The pros are that students don't have to wake up super early to get ready, attendance is better than regular schools, and online makes things easier. Virtual "attendance" was 98 percent for the day, better than a regular day"(NPR). It seems like online classes are a benefit for many students, especially if they feel sick and don't want to come to school. The cons are not being able to see students and have conversations with them. Teachers would also lose their jobs, but overall the idea is very beneficial.

I think that this is a great idea but has different pros and cons. It would be nice to stay home so that we didn't have to get up early and rush to school and then to extracurricular activities. "Most colleges say that kids should be taking at least one online course, and there's a lot of careers where people can work from home." I agree with this because a lot of people are starting to work from home. It is also good that if you are sick then you can still go to school from home and not get so far behind on your work. I think that sometimes it would be hard to do everything from home though since there are more distractions.

I think a virtual day for school would be really interesting; it has the potential to be a success or a complete failure. For kids who are sick and can’t attend school, it’s great for them because they can enjoy the comfort of their own home without having to miss anything. However, for those who can’t access the internet or don’t have their own computer this task may be difficult. But, if the school supplies them there won’t be a problem. It seemed like many students enjoyed the school day because “the students' biggest request for the next Virtual Day was that the school takes one step further into the world of telecommuting” (NPR). One major con to a virtual school day is that there are no hands on experiences or personal interaction between others, or even becoming close with your classes. If this class started online and not in person, how would one be able to grow a friendship with another?

I believe that the Virtual Day could be a very useful tool, and could definitely be used in the future. The Virtual Day can definitely help to teach some important life skills that we would need for the future. For example, "'Most colleges say that kids should be taking at least one online course, and there's a lot of careers where people can work from home'"(Lederman). In the article, it also stated that the school's attendance was higher than an average school day. This is probably because doing school from online is more relaxed, and students have less to worry about than a normal day. I think there should also be normal school days mixed in with the Virtual Days. This is because the social aspect of school, and many other aspects are very important skills learned at school and are needed for the future.

ReplyDeleteI think that virtual school would be very beneficial to students. Virtual school allows students to go at their own pace. Sometimes when I would stay home sick from school I would have to make up the work at home. When I did the video notes online it felt like I could learn more from those than the notes I take in class. I could pause the video and re-watch the parts I didn't understand and spend less time on the parts that I did understand. "Most colleges say that kids should be taking at least one online course, and there's a lot of careers where people can work from home" (NPR). Kids can learn a lot from virtual classes and they should be trying at least one in their high school years.
ReplyDeleteA virtual school day would be a good experiment for our school to try out. Shaking up the environment and providing a new way to intake information would be very interesting to do; A virtual class has the ability to either succeed or fail. Online school would be good for those whom are sick, or have a busy schedule so they can pick when the best time to learn for them is. However, for those who can’t access the internet this may be difficult.Although a small percentage of the student body would not be able to access the internet from home, the public library is an option. Another great thing about online school is it is providing the opportunity to experience working from home. "'Most colleges say that kids should be taking at least one online course, and there's a lot of careers where people can work from home'"(Lederman). Online school would be a good idea to test for a day at Oak Ridge. Gabi LaBeaux p.6
ReplyDeleteI feel virtual schooling would be an ideal idea that a lot of students should take advantage of. Not only would people not have to attend school, but we would also be learning and getting the education we need. I think this would also be alot easier for most students. There are some people who love the idea of going to school and walking from class to class, but the majority of students rather have the option of sleeping in, being able to take breaks, and having more freedom. There also was a study that says,"In student surveys taken after the event, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Virtual "attendance" was 98 percent for the day, better than a regular day" (NPR).
ReplyDeleteI think that virtual school is a really good idea. It would give students a chance to work at their own pace. It would also give students a chance to be able to go back and look at notes over and over until they get it. "Most colleges say that kids should be taking at least one online course, and there's a lot of careers where people can work from home" (NPR). Even later in life people sometimes work from home and online courses give them a chance to see if that's something that would interest them.

I feel like virtual school could would have a negative effect on learning and grades overall. This is because it would make it easier for kids to not pay attention during an online lesson because there is no one actually keeping focused. Also skipping class would go up greatly because there are no consequences for missing virtual school. Also it would prevent learning because most kids would procrastinate and rush through lessons, so they wouldn't really learn anything. Overall i think that virtual learning is a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteI think that virtual school is great idea. Having this as an option would allow students to go at their own pace and really learn and understand the material. Public school does not work for everyone, so the virtual school is a great alternative. Its also true that lots of jobs these days are mainly working from home on the computer, so by having gone through a virtual school would be beneficial to many students.
ReplyDeleteHannah Miller, p2
I think that the virtual school idea is an interesting thought. I feel that like there could be many positive things coming out of that new program but also many negatives. For example, what if "my baby brother is distracting"(anonymous student). It is a great idea but should be looked more into before our school should ever do something like this.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article, I like the idea of "virtual school", especially what the article said "And then there's the added benefit of having a backup plan for the school in case of snow days or other emergencies." (Week #5 (2/22-2/26)- Study In Your PJs? What A High School 'Work From Home Day' Looks Like (NPR)) where I used to live, I have to deal with school being cancelled. Sure, it can be nice once in awhile, but that just means that it's taking away days of summer vacation. I think virtual school can benefit big time for this kind of problem in some schools.
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of "virtual school". I think it could be a really good idea and as Lederman said "Virtual "attendance" was 98 percent for the day, better than a regular day". I believe that more kids would attend "virtual school" than real school because "they can go at their own pace" and maybe they are sick; the student would still be able to participate(NPA). I feel like "virtual school" would be a cool thing to try.
ReplyDeleteI really like this idea and I think it would be a great idea to try at our school. Most students need a change of scenery every once in a while. The school that tried this has 21% the number of students that our school has. Another reason this would be great to try is "...having a backup plan for the school in case of snow days or other emergencies" (NPR). However, at our school we have many additional classes such as band or PE which would require a modified version or a way of trusting the students to take a run. I definitely think this would be a great idea and our administration would be surprised with the percentage of attendance they would get. It is definitely a way to get the students more interested in school and use the technology we have today.

The idea of "virtual school" sounds like a good idea because it allows all the students to work at their own pace. Some students could work/learn much faster than other students do, and they could be holding them back. Also, the article sated that students in college should be taking at least one online course, and this could prepare them for that. "Most colleges say that kids should be taking at least one online course, and there's a lot of careers where people can work from home" (NPR). This idea could also could some students more much involved and interested in school.
ReplyDeleteI think that the online school for a day is a good idea. For the kids who are sick, having the option of taking the courses online for that day would be beneficial to them. Otherwise the kids would miss all the instruction for that day. It was also said that, ‘“Virtual "attendance" was 98 percent for the day, better than a regular day (NPR).”’ I think that the trial for this idea was very beneficial, especially now where everything revolves around the support of technology. The option of having online classes is beneficial.

This scares me. School isn't just about book learning, but learning about social situations and being able to interact with one another. Even with facetime, it's not the same as passing by others in the halls. I agree that it'd be good to have a couple things online, such as English assignments and an occasional History project. Though I do disagree certain subjects should stay away from being online such as Math and art.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I believe school is more than just assignments and work. It is about interaction, and building ones attention span to sit through classes, rather than being lazy and eating cheetos all day at home. Going to classes allows one to interact with other whether they be teachers or adults, and many people could benefit from this. There are kids who are clueless when it comes to social interaction, and school allows these kids to practice life skills to benefit them. However, teens could get more sleep which would allow for a more focused education if they stayed at home. It states, "Most colleges say that kids should be taking at least one online course" (NPR). In this case, one online class is acceptable. But more than one feeds more negativity than good.
ReplyDeleteSchool is about learning about new things. But it is also about building social with your friends. You get to talk to a lot of people during class and between classes. When you are at home you do not talk to that many people. Teens could get more sleep which would help them in school though.
ReplyDeleteRichard Hull period 2
I believe that this is a great idea for schools nationwide. Not only would this help students be comfortable and relaxed while learning, but also they wouldn't have the stress of having to get up super early or worry about being late for school. With technology advancing today, we as a society should take advantage of what it can bring us. Not only would this benefit students, but also teachers. This can help teachers not be in a room full of students of 30+ and have only 1 person trying to answer all 30 questions. I'm the article it says." Our ultimate goal is to prepare kids for life after high school." This shows your life even after high school won't be sitting in a room listening to someone talk/ lecture. More so, it will be more involved with technology and more independence/freedom to the individual.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that school should just be based off of homework or testing. School is a place where people should be able to interact with one another and interact within the lessons that are taught in each class.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great idea. Some people do better with learning through forms of technology and others prefer hands on in the classroom learning. Either way it is a personal choice and it is a choice that should be up to the students personal preference. A lot of kids do online schooling and do perfectly well while others prefer to be in a classroom both have their positives and negatives. In my opinion school and the social aspects of school are not cut out for everyone it can be stressful and I think that virtual school serves as a positive alternative. - Sabrina Shaw

ReplyDeleteI think that having a day to work from home every so often is s really good idea. Classrooms can be extremely stressful, with noise and distractions. However, if you're in your room in your PJs, things might be more comfortable and peaceful, making it easier to get things done. Another reason why the online classes are a great idea is that the school is "prepar[ing] kids for life after high school" (NPR). Teaching us how college will be, or even how life after college will be is so important to do during high school. We need to be prepared when we leave high school and go off to a whole different way of learning in college. Overall it sounds like a great idea; I wouldn't mind working from home for a few days a year.
ReplyDeleteI think that having occasional work from home days are a good thing to have, but if children are going to school from home every day I feel like they would miss out on some of the important things you learn from going to school everyday, like learning how to interact with your schoolmates and working together. Not to mention making friends and going to school dances, football games and other fun activities. So I believe that having a moderate amount of online schooling would be a good idea, but it is also necessary to be physically going to school.
ReplyDeleteThis idea has many different pros and cons to it. The pros are that students don't have to wake up super early to get ready, attendance is better than regular schools, and online makes things easier. But the Cons are the social(face to face) interaction that people would loose. Sure you can face time someone on your iPhone or iPad but it's not the same. I think this can go either way, Based on an individuals opinion.
ReplyDeleteI think that having a work day from your own house would be pretty cool but things that you get from actually being at school would be severely lacking. These would include meeting people, having communication with other classmates, working together and so on. All these things are almost essential for when you get older and have to work with others maybe to make an idea be a physical thing. So all together this is an okay idea but probably should be actually done for the listed reasons.

I believe that it is a cool idea to be able to work from home, but I don't think we should carry out a plan to make this a all the time thing. People should just go to school and learn and not just stay home and work. Going to school helps our social skills by talking to teachers and students. Being home will just make us become more lazy because you don't have to dress or move really. Some people cant even do at home work because of distractions and if they don't have a computer.
ReplyDeleteI believe this is a good idea. With technology always advancing, people should advance with it. If someone is having a bad day they can just stay home that day, but still do their work. I don't believe we should always stay home and away from school, because we will loose our communication skills. Overall this is a good idea, but we should not always do our work from home.

ReplyDeleteI do not believe that virtual schooling is the best way to approach our education. Principal Troy Ledermen said that their "'ultimate goal is to prepare kids for life after high school'" (Lederman). And in doing so, I don't think it is smart to allow students to stay at home and lounge around, while trying to learn. Students need to be in environments that give allow them to work on their social skills as well as their educational skills. Though I do agree that it is a great tool that students can use when they are too sick to attend school, I don't think our education should be overrun by technology.

The idea of a virtual school is really interesting. I believe it could definitely work for some students and be a lot more convenient. As a dog owner, i hate having my pets locked up in my apartment all day, so i'd love to be able to stay home from school and let them outside, etc. It would also be great for sick students who can't go to school. The only thing i worry about is the students who don't learn well virtually. Some people need more hands on approaches so I believe there should be an option for both. I personally learn better in person, as I have taken online courses before and found it a bit difficult(though more convenient) to learn the material. It all depends on the individual and they should have a choice in the matter.
ReplyDeleteI think that this would be a good idea because it allows students to focus on their school work in a more comfy environment than sitting at school. The only downside to this would be that I think it might cause some students to lose social skills considering socializing with people is a big part of today's school systems. But I think that it also gives students the opportunity to be more independent and not having a teacher try to baby them like it often is today at many schools. I think that this virtual schooling idea should definitely be taken into consideration, but it should also be an optional idea.

I think that virtual school is an idea that's maybe not the best. Kids need to be able to get out of their houses and interact with others, not just sitting at home and doing school for a possible few hours. I could understand if someone needs to take a class or two that's not offered at the school but could count as credit, but I think that kids getting up and physically going to school to learn is a better opportunity to meet others and be interactive in a classroom. It also provides structure that some kids may need to stay on task and understand what they're learning. All in all, I think we should stick to going to school outside of our homes so that we can step out of our safe place.
ReplyDeleteI believe the virtual schooling is a great idea, rather than teachers having to answer multiple questions of different students within a certain amount of time, however, I think that technology could be taking over too much of schooling or teaching. Technology and online school may be difficult for so students to grasp the concepts of the subject, some people are more visual learners and need to work out complex questions like math with a teacher or tutor in person, so what happens then? I think that virtual teaching provides students with comfort, but can also be harder than regular teaching.
ReplyDeleteI think that this kind of learning can't replace our classes at school. I don't believe that many high school students are not responsible enough to do all the work at home as they are supposed to. I personally don't like to work on computers and it would make everything much harder; especially for subjects like mathematics where teachers need to explain a lot.
ReplyDeleteBruno Wilhelm P.5
This sounds like a learning and teaching technique that could be really fun! I personally would love to get to stay home and learn but be comfortable. It would be nice to take little breaks when needed, because I know for some people 2 hours straight can be really difficult to say focused. But Schoology seems to be great from what i am currently doing, so the next step would be to go all the way!
ReplyDeleteI believe that one virtual day away from school can teach us how working from home can be. It gives us a wide expansion of different working environments. If it does not work out, then schools won´t have one. But for now, I think that schools should let their students have a virtual day of learning.
ReplyDeleteI think its a good idea to have kids stay home from school because the kids would be able to get a different perspective of school. Adults work from home is a different perspective.
ReplyDeleteI think that a virtual school has its pros and cons. I think that some people may be more comfortable working in a more comfortable and recognizable environment, but I also think that it is important for kids to go out and interact with one another. "Ultimate goal is to prepare kids for life after high school" (Lederman). With what Lederman is saying, I think he believes that attending a regular school will help with future experiences and it may not be a great ides to do a virtual school.
ReplyDeleteI believe that schools should let students have a study at home day. Students I think would actually be able to study more and get there homework done because they can do things on their own time frame if they have to go to the bathroom they don't have to ask and we can snuggle up in our PJ's and blankets while we study instead of sitting in the cold classrooms with jeans on. My point is we should try it out its like trying new food if you don't like it you don't eat it again so if we don't like how the studying at home works out we don't do it ever again. I also believe we should have it once a week."Ultimate goal is to prepare kids for life after high school"(Lederman). This is exactly my point if they are trying to prepare us for after high school my parents work from home at home is their office so I'm sure it wouldn't hurt us if we tried it once.
