Dixville Notch results: Sanders, Kasich lead the charge

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Ohio Gov. John Kasich won the most Republican votes in Dixville Notch early Tuesday morning, while Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders won all the Democratic votes.
Kasich came away with three while business mogul Donald Trump won two. On the Democratic side, Sanders received four.
The results are a welcome sign for Kasich, whose campaign said he actively reached out to all nine voters who voted early Tuesday near the Canadian border in the first balloting of the New Hampshire primary.
The small groups of voters in the communities of Dixville Notch, Hart's Location, and Millsfield all participated today in the idealized New Hampshire tradition of voting en masse at midnight when polls open. The votes of those communities — particularly Dixville Notch — are given outsize importance as predictors of who will go on to larger victories in the presidential race.
Overall on Tuesday, the three communities cast 65 votes, with 17 going to Sanders.
Kasich was also the top Republican vote-getter in Hart's Location, with five out of 14, followed by Trump with four and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie with two. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio each got on the board with a vote each.
For the Democrats, Sanders took 12, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton seven and Connecticut resident Mark Stewart Greenstein (also known as Mark Stewart) received two votes in Hart's Location.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz won Millsfield with nine of 18 Republican votes, distantly followed by Trump at three.
Kaisch, Christie, Bush, Rubio and Carly Fiorina each got one vote there; Sen. Rand Paul also got one vote in Millsfield even though he dropped out of the presidential race last week. On the Democratic side, Clinton got two votes and Sanders added one vote.

Dixville Notch, in particular, gets significant attention for such a small community (its population is 12 people now) in picking the eventual Democratic and Republican primary winners. In 2008, then-Sen. Barack Obama won the majority of Dixville Notch voters (claiming seven) to John Edwards' two and Bill Richardson's one. That same year, Sen. John McCain won the Republican community with four votes, while Mitt Romney got two and Rudy Giuliani got one.
In 2012, Obama handily won the Democratic vote, but Republican voters split between Romney and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, each of whom got two votes. Newt Gingrich garnered one.

  1. Honestly I really don't care who becomes the president, just as long as it isn't some psycho path. All the cantidates seem just awful. Ok, so the article is really about winning the small town votes and eventually those will accumulate into a good enough number. And that's what a lot of these candidates are doing. I mean it's a smart move. As the article staes,"The small groups of voters in the communities of Dixville Notch, Hart's Location, and Millsfield all participated today in the idealized New Hampshire tradition of voting en masse at midnight when polls open." This is where the candidates can pull away from the competition and win the votes of America. ~Nate Kettering Per.2

  2. All the people at the time running for president are just a bunch junk and some I feel don't know what they are really doing. These people running for president are only most of the time getting small town votes to win. Which to me is just sad. They don't even have votes for most of the big cities because nobody likes them to become our nations new president. Josh Leifker per.1

    1. I agree with your statement. Most of the people that's running for president doesn't really know what they're doing. However; I disagree with the fact how you said that they only get votes from small towns to win because no one wants them to become our nations new president. If no one wants them to become the president of our nation they won't even get enough votes to win. Per.1

  3. Though there are some I like more than others, I don't necessarily like any of the presidential candidates. In my opinion it would be a nightmare to see a person as disrespectful as Donald Trump become president. I am not against the idea of having a woman becoming president, however I do not think that Hillary Clinton is right for the role. We need to be careful when deciding the next leader of our country.

  4. I don't really keep up with all the news going on with the candidates running for presidents. But, from what I do know I believe the ones running aren't fit for the job. The things Donald Trump wants to change for America are ridiculous. Having a woman for president would be a nice change, but I don't believe Hilary Clinton would be the best for the job either.

  5. It is hard to keep up with the news about the elections because of soccer and school, but from the little that I know, I know a Democratic Socialist is not what this country needs. Although "Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders won all the Democratic votes" in a town of 12 people, I do not think he will be successful in bigger communities. Sanders claims that he can make college free; but we all know nothing comes for free unless its by taxing the "rich". i do not necessarily believe that Trump would be the best candidate either but I strongly agree that Bernie Sanders should not be the president.

  6. With all the different candidates running for president I believe Bernie Sanders is a pretty good candidate. Bernie sanders knows what the people want and he's trying to get that for the U.S. Unlike Donald trump who is a disrespectful candidate, i would not want Donald trump as a President. In the future we need a president who is respectful and willing to help the U.S. A president who cares about other peoples needs like it seems Bernie Sanders does. The candidates just want the small towns votes, so they say promises they can't keep. I believe that we really need to think hard on the decision of who becomes president.

  7. In my opinion I don't really care about all of this since I cannot even vote yet. Yes, I think some people would make a better President than others and as long as they are going to try to help our country and not just ruin it more then everything shall be fine. I think most of the candidates are not fit to be president especially Donald Trump who just wants to do crazy things to our country.

  8. Like many other people, i do not necessarily care about how becomes president. To be honest they all have their faults, and their benefits. I love the ideas of one candidate, and hate the ideas of another. I really dont like some of the aspects some of the candidates are focusing on, and would dread the outcome if they became president. But i also really like the ideas of another, that many people do not like at all... It shall be interesting to see who America likes the most.

  9. I do not really care about who becomes president. I cant even vote for who i would want to become president. I haven't had that much time to keep up with all of the news and current events about the presidents. I hope whoever becomes our new president does not make bad decisions. I really hope to see who will be our new president.

  10. I really hope Donald Trump wins due to some great points he addressees. One of these reasons is the political correctness our country has acquired. Everything now-a-days has to be politically correct or their will be a controversy. This has to stop. This is a huge barrier our leaders have to overcome in order to get things done, which in turn, means less gets done. If Bernie Sanders gets elected I might consider leaving this country. He is a big time socialist and would be a terrible thing for our country. Hillary on the other hand should be in jail. Ultimately, Trump should be elected so he can make America great again. 11. I do not understand how Sanders is up in the polls. 90% increase in taxes? He is openly a socialist and that should be concerning to every party involved. Hilary is just as bad, it would be really great to have a woman as president, but Clinton would not help our country. She is lying and manipulative. Again, not a great fit for the president position. I cannot vote, therefore my opinion is irrelevant, but it is important that we pick a candidate that will make the biggest and best impact on America. America is trying to get back on it's feet, and some of these people are not right for the job. I'm not saying that Trump is the best candidate, but if it comes down to he and Sadners, Trump has my support.

  13. I believe that Sanders will have the most beneficial impact as President of the United States. Having been a senator for 16 years, he has garnered enough experience to know what action to take on the United States. Having universal healthcare and free college education, which he advocates for, will be great for emerging millennials. Sanders having "won all the Democratic votes" (Strauss) is a fantastic result from New Hampshire, and I cannot wait for future results of polls and elections.

  14. Lately I haven't been really paying attention to the presidential candidates, I have only been seeing the bigger things that have spread to everybody. From what I've heard we haven't really come across a perfect president for America. I am aware that we will never have a "perfect" one, but none of them up to this point have really been satisfactory to what America needs at this time.

  16. To be completely honest, the Presidential election of 2017 seems like a joke. To me, there is nobody who sounds like they are fit to run our country. There are so many jokes about all of the candidates that make fun of their different personalities. If i were to pick a candidate that I would feel comfortable with being President, I would have to choose John Kasich. In the article titled "Dixville Notch results: Sanders, Kasich lead the charge, Daniel Strauss discusses the results of the votes. Strauss states, "John Kasich won the most Republican votes in Dixville Notch early Tuesday morning," (Strauss Li. 1).

  17. This article came as a surprise to me. I would have predicted that Trump and Cruz would have had a close race again on the Republican side. I would have also forecasted that Hillary Clinton would have won on the democratic side. However, "Kasich came away with three while business mogul Donald Trump won two. On the Democratic side, Sanders received four" (Politico). It is interesting to see a shift in the people's opinions of each political party. What I believe is really a determining factor, is the middle of race, when candidates will go to a larger amount of diversified states. This will be the part of campaign where certain important figures will drop out, therefore leaving the most qualified candidates for the win.

  18. A lot of people above keep saying that they don't care who our next president is, but they should. Sure, right now we can't vote so we think it doesn't concern us, but whoever gets elected will be in office until we are 19 or 20 years old, and by then, you will care. Paying attention to politics as a teenager is really important. Most teens are influenced by their parents in terms of whether they are a democrat or republican. Again, this is a bad idea because you are not the same as your parents. You have a totally different mind set than them, and being a republican or democrat just because your parents are is honestly pretty stupid. You should see which candidates stand up for what you think is important. Personally, I'm really excited to see that Bernie "won all the Democratic votes" (Strauss) in New Hampshire; he stands for equal rights for everyone in this country and that's what we need.

  19. This campaign for president is one of the most interesting campaigns in history. We have a wide variety of political people who are running for president. We may have America's first socialist or women president. Or we may have another celebrity as our president. Whoever it is, they know that it is a huge responsibility to become president. "Ohio Gov. John Kasich won the most republican votes." That shows that some people who may not have the most publicity around them can be proven to take on this job and have people believe in him. Even though Donald Trump is at his peak, John Kasich has a chance of beating him for the republican presidential spot.

  20. Why is there so much importance set on this one location for voting? How does the little vote predict anything? I do not follow politics very much because at my age there is nothing I have a say in. I'm sure that will change when I am able to vote, but for the time being, I choose to be skeptical of articles like this. This is just one demographic of a very large country with a variety of different people who are likely to vote for different candidates, so just because the results say one thing there does not mean the same results will pop up throughout the country.

  21. I think the next presidential election will be interesting. I think that Donald trump is good at speaking and has the resources to be a good president, but because of his unusual approaches for fixing problems in the US, he would not be a good president. To me, the person who is elected president does not really matter, because of the way the US government is setup, it makes it hard for the president to make changes to the country regardless of their view or political party. Although I do think most of the presidential candidates are fine, I think it would be bad if the person who becomes president is someone who represents the US in a negative way.

    1. I agree with Dylan on what he said about how the president really can only do so much because of the way the government is set up, which is good. But I personally don't know to much about politics. I do agree that Trump is a well spoken candidate, but may not be the best option for president. But if you really look at all the candidates, America really just has to pick their poison, because they all have bad things about them. Even if I was old enough to vote, I wouldn't. It wouldn't be fair for me to vote since I never stay up to date on all the happenings of the election, debates, speeches, etc. And to be entirely honest, I couldn't even tell you who else other than Donald Trump, and Hilary Clinton, is running.

  22. I think and believe that the presidential election is going to be very interesting and hard to put a finger on who will win. Although I am kind of confused of how this little of a vote makes such a huge impact I am curious to see how it turns out and who wins the vote. I think as a younger person, as I don't follow politics a lot I can still be a little skeptical about these kinds of articles and or writings about these politics. A lot of the canidates have a lot of potential and it will be interesting to see and follow the election.

  23. This is a very interesting race thus far, with very different presidential candidates. I believe that one state doesn't specifically matter especially a smaller one like New Hampshire with not a large population compared to a bigger state like California. I believe they should cover the bigger states more than these smaller states.

  24. It is crazy to see how many different candidates are running. This is a very interesting election and I am very interested in it myself, I do not know who I want to win but mostly all of the candidates that are running have full potential. In the past I was not that interested in who is going to run but now it seems more important because one wants someone who knows what they are doing.

  25. The campaign has been interesting so far and to see how many different people are running. It is very interesting to look on the news and hear my parents talk about what is happening so far in the campaign. I haven't really been following the campaign and I don't really cares who wins but it has been very interesting. It is also interesting to see that Bernie Sanders has "Won all the democratic votes." (Strauss) I belive it is good for a presdient to win all votes in his political party but it is a very tight race and cant wait to see what happens next

  26. Hearing people talk about this on t.v makes me think that Cruz and Trump would lead the debate and earn votes but at the same time people are always talking bad about Trump so people wouldn't give him votes. I don't follow this campaign so I don't know what people should be leading in terms of being the best for this country. With Bernie "Winning all the votes" (strauss) It has more competition and more interest to the campaign. p.2

  27. I am not surprised that trump was not in the top 2. I feel that Trump is someone that cares about himself and money, he is dangerous to people because he tells you what you want to hear. With that being said I feel that it is a good thing that Trump wasn't leading the debate.

  28. For me it is hard keeping up with all the current events and news about the candidates that are running for president because their is so much. But I've heard some parts of the debates going on lately. The way Donald Trump wants to run the U.S is rediculous and what he is saying about the people. It would be nice for Hillary Clinton to become president and she would be the first woman president which would be good for a change. It's hard for me to choose who I want as president because a lot of the candidates aren't good. I'm not old enough to vote yet anyway and would be hard if I was able to. Brandon Marshall period 4

  29. I am honestly not really sure who I want to be president. I will be able to vote in the next presidential election and will honestly probably just vote who my parents vote for. However, none of the presidential candidates stand out to them yet either. I mean I am probably not going to vote for him but the most hype I hear about is on Trump. Donald Trump is the most talked about whether people are saying that he is bad or good.

  32. I love Sanders, I don't agree on a lot of his views, but hes going against Hillary, and doing good that's what i love. Hillary, I dislike with a passion, I can see no future with her, where America actually changes for the better, but stay on its current path. Sanders has took the attention away from Hillary, when i first heard Sanders was running, i thought he had no chance, but after the outcome, which was a win for Sanders, I have hope for him now, hes made Hillary become more alert and shes now asked for her husband Bill Clinton to join the effort. What I love is Sanders has shown Hillary that he is a candidate not just a thing that will pass like they said with trump. If I were able to vote, id vote for Donald Trump, because of his ideas with China, China imports are not taxed, but china taxes are exports to them. This makes it hard to have business that sell to china, some cant even make it because of this tax, so trump wants to make it so imports on china goods will be taxed. This will bring a lot more money back to America, which we need as we soon will hit 20 trillion dollars in debt, this idea will also bring more small business back to America. This is what I think will move America forward.

Theirs also many other reasons, if you guys have ever actually sat down and listened to Trumps ideas on health care, its amazing, he knows what hes talking about. With Health Care there are certain borders they can go in. California only supply Health Care from California, you cant get insured with an out of state health insurance, which means there only a certain amount of health care plans you can choose from, this makes it easy for the insurance companies to monopolize the health care system. Trump wants to demolish those lines, so American citizens can get cheaper health care, because with competition, cheaper prices are found. This is why I believe Trump is a Semi-acceptable candidate.

    1. So you're only voting for Trump because of the trade with China? what about FREE healthcare for all with Sanders? What about the great discrimination with Muslims and Hispanics following Trump? He gains followers with fear. Trump is ignorant and selfish; often hypocritical. How "free" will those Muslims and Hispanics feel if uneducated voters vote for Trump and end up winning? How "free" do you think they feel right now? Trump has already had a negative impact of America and he is simply a candidate.

    2. No, I cant vote wish I could, but Id vote for Trump not just cause what he'd do in China, but what'd he'd do in general. Trump may have said some stupid things but, when i look at what Bernie and Hillary have done it disgusts me, for one Hillary only targets Woman and African Americans, there the only candidates that have commercials just to appeal to one race not the entire race. This disgusts me, trump nor any of the other candidates have commercials towards one race. When saying that people are uneducated, if they vote for Trump is stupid, so your saying that more then 36% of the country is uneducated, your mistaken, also how has he had a negative impact on America please provide textual evidence next time you comment on my post. ;)

I don't want to say a prediction for who will win and compete against each other because i dont think that there is a candidate that i really feel is better than the other. I do think that this will be a very interesting election though.
