Week #10 (4/4-4/8)- Opinion: America needs to raise the bar on education for our students

First lady Michelle Obama speaks to nearly 2,000 high school students in May 2015 at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. The rally was part of her Reach Higher initiative. Photo: Office of the first lady of the U.S.

As first lady, I have spent a lot of time talking with young people all across this country about education. I have heard about their hopes of going to college, getting good jobs and one day starting families of their own. I also have heard about the challenges they face: the rising costs of tuition and the insecurities and fears that come along with being first-generation college students.
My message to these young people is simple. While all of us adults — teachers, administrators and policymakers — have to do a better job of giving them the best schools and opportunities for their future, at the end of the day, they also need to step up and take responsibility for their education themselves.
What that means is going to class every day, setting their goals high and working like crazy to achieve them. Education and hard work has been the story of my life and of my husband's life too. So when I talk to young people, my hope is that they see our story can be their story, too — as long as they are willing to dedicate themselves to their education.

Reach Higher For Higher Education

I officially gave this effort to promote the value of education a name — my Reach Higher initiative. Its goal is to inspire young people to reach higher, by extending their education beyond high school so that they can own their futures. We are focusing on things like financial aid, college counseling, academic and summer planning, and college visits. Our goal is to ensure that every student in this country understands how to pursue and complete their education.
We are doing all of this because we know that these days, a high school diploma simply is not enough. To get a good job and be hired against applicants from all over the world, our young people need something more. The same thing is true for our country as well — we need a highly trained, highly educated workforce to compete in the 21st century. All across America, we need communities that truly value and promote education.
The truth is, it was not all that long ago that our country was setting the standard for the rest of the world. A generation ago, America had the highest percentage of college graduates in the world. Today, however, we have dropped all the way to 12th place. That is simply not acceptable, and that is why my husband set his "North Star" goal — that by the year 2020, we will once again have the highest college graduation rate in the world. Already, through efforts like Race to the Top, we are seeing states and school districts across the country make real improvements for our kids. Today, our high school graduation rate is the highest on record.

We've All Got Work To Do

While we should be proud of these gains, we have still got plenty of work to do. It is going to take all of us to inspire our young people to reach higher. That means more parents encouraging their kids and demanding more from their kids' schools. It means creating more partnerships between high schools, colleges and businesses so that young people can learn the skills they will need for their future careers. It means cultivating a new generation of world-class teachers and school leaders. And, of course, it means young people stepping up to take responsibility for their futures as well.
The good news is we know that all of this is possible. Every day, we are seeing examples of communities stepping up to support their young people. I saw one of these efforts firsthand in San Antonio, Texas, where they were celebrating their fourth annual college week. I had a chance to speak at their college signing day, which is a huge rally with thousands of high school seniors who publicly announce their plans to attend and graduate from college.
Not only the graduating seniors were involved — everyone in San Antonio wears their college T-shirts on signing day. All week long, the community holds college-application workshops for high schoolers and gives middle school students advice on getting to college.

From Immigrant To College Student

Everything they are doing in San Antonio is helping to support the dreams of so many promising young people. They are young people like Rocio Alvarado, a remarkable young woman I met on my visit. Rocio's family came to the United States when she was a child, and they lived together in one tiny, crumbling room. Her father worked long hours for low wages, and when they needed money to pay for her mother's medications, Rocio helped sell homemade tamales outside her school. Despite these challenges, Rocio's family believed deeply in the power of education, and they pushed Rocio to study as hard as she could. So Rocio rose from English-as-a-second-language classes all the way to Advanced Placement classes. Next fall, she is heading off to the University of Texas at San Antonio to pursue her degree.
There are young people just like Rocio in every community in this country — young people with so much promise and so many skills. All they need is a little extra support from folks like us. So we have got to make the sacrifices and investments that will inspire every child to reach higher and give them an opportunity to fulfill their boundless potential. If we do that, then I am confident that we can give all our kids the bright futures they so richly deserve.

  1. I hope that these goals and plans to better prepare students for college actually work. It is stressful to prepare and I am lost in the process. It starts at college where we need to have a semester long course or so for practical features in life, such as teaching students about applying for loans or paying taxes. If we make the high school students see clear results and impacts of what they're learning then they may see why a higher education would be beneficial encouraging more students to apply to colleges.

  2. I agree with Michelle Obama when she says, “We are doing all of this because we know that these days, a high school diploma simply is not enough. To get a good job and be hired against applicants from all over the world, our young people need something more” (Newsela). As the years go on, a basic high school diploma with general education is not enough. Striving for even better education and working hard now will make our futures’ brighter and with more chances for opportunity. I further hope that in the end these plans will work.

  3. I agree with Erika and Marie. A high school diploma is not enough for young people, especially if they want to have a good job in the future. There should definitely be more realistic classes in both high school and college. Taxes and using a checkbook would be more practical and beneficial to teach. ¨A generation ago, America had the highest percentage of college graduates in the world. Today, however, we have dropped all the way to 12th place"(Newsela). I found this quote interesting and relevant because so many students can afford college, which means they will more than likely not get a good job after graduating high school.

  4. I think that these goals are very important to help students prepare better for college and life. I hope that they will be successful. "We are focusing on things like financial aid, college counseling, academic and summer planning, and college visits. Our goal is to ensure that every student in this country understands how to pursue and complete their education" (Newsela). I think it will be very beneficial to teach people about college and all those things. It is very true that it is hard to get jobs now days with only a high school education. I hope that they will follow through with these plans in the future. Per. 4

  5. I like the idea that Michelle Obama is presenting, that education should be properly and thoroughly looked over. I like that to get what kids need she says, "What that means is going to class every day, setting their goals high and working like crazy to achieve them"(Michelle Obama). What she brings up in the beginning but then doesn't address it at all throughout her speech is the rising cost of tuition. I think that to achieve major goals that a good way to help is to lower the cost of tuition.

  6. I think that if these goals are good and if we could reach these goals i think that the world would be a lot more successful and better of."We are focusing on things like financial aid, college counseling, academic and summer planning, and college visits. Our goal is to ensure that every student in this country understands how to pursue and complete their education" (Newsela) this would all lead to a better prepared and more ready student coming out off the college campus. With tuition on the rise wed have to lower it in order to achieve these goals.

  7. I think that if these plans for better preparing kids for college worked it would be a worldwide achievement. All high school students are always stressed about how they are going to get into college in the final years of high school. If these goals for students worked, so much stress would be lifted off of all of our shoulders. Michelle Obama even says, "We are focusing on things like financial aid, college counseling, academic and summer planning, and college visits. Our goal is to ensure that every student in this country understands how to pursue and complete their education"(Obama).

  8. I think that the plans for preparing kids for college and such are great. Us as a country needs to focus more on education and in my opinion put our schools more as a priority in funding and in our country. I agree with what she says because a free high school education now a days are just not enough. Many students struggle economically to succeed after high school because they do not have the funds to further their education. "We are doing all of this because we know that these days, a high school diploma simply is not enough" (Obama).

  9. But the problem is the ridonculously high costs of going to a college Michelle. D: But yes, "A high school diploma simply is not enough" (Obama) is completely true unless you know how to play the economy or actually put some time in creating something new. But the problem is that people cannot afford to go to a college these days. America is the most expensive Country to live in if you want to go to college. That's the problem. At least you acknowledge that we have down down the leaderboards, "A generation ago, America had the highest percentage of college graduates in the world. Today, however, we have dropped all the way to 12th place"(Obama).

  10. I think that Michelle's plan is a good idea. If we can figure out a way to get more people graduating college and into good careers then why wouldn't we take advantage of this option. I agree when Michelle says,"We are doing all of this because we know that these days, a high school diploma simply is not enough" (Obama). It is important to have realistic goals that exceed high school education. If this is accomplished, it will allow our country to continue to grow.

  11. I agree with Michelle Obama's plan. Everyone should go to college and graduate and in the future get good jobs that can support them. Education is a big part of life, you need to have a certain level of education for particular jobs and specialties. So I believe we should take this option.

  12. I agree with what Michelle Obama is saying. Trying to plan for college and figuring out how to get the grades to be accepted into college can be very overwhelming and confusing. Being able to have help on knowing where to go after high school and how to plan for everything would be very helpful and encouraging. This is one of the best ideas for students of today and I think we should proceed with it.

  13. I think that Michelle Obama's idea is definitely relevant. Encouraging and helping students graduate from college is a great opportunity that would go to waste if it didn't take off. Preparing the students especially is a great idea in my opinion because there are lots of jobs that the students can then be qualified for.

  14. I agree with what Michelle Obama had to say about womens pay and education. Women in our world have gained a lot more power then back then but we as a society need to continue and give them more respect. "We are focusing on things like financial aid, college counseling, academic and summer planning, and college visits. Our goal is to ensure that every student in this country understands how to pursue and complete their education" (Newsela. This just shows how we need to give out higher paying jobs to be equal.

  16. I think the idea Michael Obama is trying to get across to everyone will really help out all the students who need it. Michael's idea, the effort to promote the value of education will soon be really helpful. "Its goal is to inspire young people to reach higher, by extending their education beyond high school so that they can own their futures." (Obama). What they did in San Antonio, Texas by having the community workshops for high schoolers and middles schoolers was a nice chance for those students to learn about whats next for the future.

  17. I believe that Michelle Obama has a great point when she talks about how important our education is. "We are focusing on things like financial aid, college counseling, academic and summer planning, and college visits. Our goal is to ensure that every student in this country understands how to pursue and complete their education"(Obama). I agree, in our high school years, we are stressed having to study for big exams and on top of that, having a lot of homework. High school is to make the kids believe that college is actually worth it. After going to school, you could have and awesome job and everything you have ever done will pay off. "Education and hard work has been the story of my life and of my husband's life too. So when I talk to young people, my hope is that they see our story can be their story, too — as long as they are willing to dedicate themselves to their education."(Obama) When people ask you, How is school going?, they want to hear how you have put in hard work and dedication to be able to go through this.

  18. "While all of us adults — teachers, administrators and policymakers — have to do a better job of giving them the best schools and opportunities for their future, at the end of the day, they also need to step up and take responsibility for their education themselves." (Obama). When Michelle Obama said that, hopefully her plan and goals she set and have for teachers, adults, and students will actually happen and work. Michelle Obama is really putting out the value education can have and she wants to see everyone taking that opportunity. The fact that Barack Obama set the North Star goal and people followed through with shows that with the work and effort of all students, teachers, and parents, that we can be #1 and stay number one.

  19. I'm glad that there actual support for students who want to attend college. I feel that it's true that the responsibility of getting information about further education shouldn't just fall on administrators, "[students] also need to step up and take responsibility for their education themselves.(Obama). I feel that many of the students in our generation don't step up about the things they want to obtain and expect everything to be handed to them. We as a generation should be more aware that if we don' t put effort into the things we want, we wont get them.

  20. I like how Michelle Obama is helping these students go to college and creating a plan to help every student achieve their goals in a good education. I really hope that all these students will be successful in college and work really hard to make and achieve goals after high school. It is important in college to get a good education because it helps reach goals for their futures. High school isn't enough for the students educations, with college, at least students have a chance to get higher and a more advanced education.

  21. I agree that every student has a goal, and getting in to college can be tricky for students that could be pushing themselves into taking non realistic classes for themselves. Many young people have the goal of going to college, having a good job, and even starting a family. Michelle Obama has been helping the students out in going to college and even creating them a plan, which I personally think its a great idea to plan out your schooling and even future. Michelle Obama has a wonderful idea to help promote students education, which will help theses students strive and go further.

  22. I agree that a high school diploma is not enough to have an effective job in the future. However college can not be given to everyone. Not everyone deserves to go to college, like people who can't get in to any. College is a privileged, not a right. College should be for the hard working and deserving people who want to compete and take their education seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I do think that the idea of making college easier to reach is a great idea. Yet, we cannot make college open to just any student. I do agree that the United States needs to "ensure that every student in this country understands how to pursue and complete their education" (Newsela). If a student wants to go to college bad enough, they will put the work in to get to that point. Kids will excel at sports and academics if they do not have the funds to go to get a scholarship. College is a privilege and going to a college needs to be taken seriously so people can have a career later in life.

  24. Aiding students get to college is a great cause and making sure that everyone has the equal right to go to SOME college is great too. Some people like to think that all it takes to go to college is hard work, but the money you have to pay for college is almost as important. Being so, its important to "ensure that every student in this country understands how to pursue and complete their education" in hopes of making college more accessible for the lower class.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think that Michelle Obama is making a positive impact by focusing on the education of students. I think all students should be exposed to the option of college without all the other issues that come with it. This would make a positive impact on education. I think that if they make college open for everybody, but optional, then this would reach out to those who are actually interested.

  26. In this article, Michelle Obama said, " I also have heard about the challenges they face: the rising costs of tuition" (Michelle Obama) I believe this part is very true, because some of my family members had the struggles of cost of tuition or just plain money issues which prevents them to not attend college. I believe what Michelle is doing for education is a good thing, some students should not make costly tuition fee a reason to not attend college.

  27. What Michelle Obama is doing is so wonderful. I will miss her when her family leaves the White House. I believe her plan will help out many students into knowing what to do further on with their education. A high school diploma is simply not enough anymore to help people get a good job. Michelle Obama helping students setting goals and helping them go to college will ensure students that they will have a successful job after college. Our education has so much impact in what we do in our everyday lives.

  28. I think what Michelle Obama is being very helpful to eduacation. She isn't just gonna give students an opportunity to go to college, she wants to ensure that every student understands how to get to college. "Our goal is to ensure that every student in this country understands how to pursue and complete their education." (Michelle Obama). I think this is very important because the path to go to college starts very young in freshmen year. When I finished freshmen year I wasn't thinking about college at all. Now that the end of my sophomore is getting closer and closer, it is making me realize how close college really is. Kid's need to be taught that everything they do in high school will effect what college, if any, they will get into. College is kind of a scary to think about, but every student needs to be prepared for it.

  29. I agree with Mrs. Obama a lot. I believe every kid should have the opportunity to get a good education. "While all of us adults — teachers, administrators and policymakers — have to do a better job of giving them the best schools and opportunities for their future, at the end of the day, they also need to step up and take responsibility for their education themselves" (Obama). Having a good education will lead to bright futures for these kids. They could persue their dream jobs with the right education.

  30. Mrs. Obama has a very accurate perception on the way education can benefit kids later in life. She states "I have also heard about the challenges they face; the rising costs in tuition..." (Michelle Obama). This is just an example of how she understands what parents go through and how money plays a large role in college. I see many students who don't care at all about their grades, yet fail to realize that they are setting themselves up for lower opportunities in the near future.

  31. I really think the education system needs to be completely redesigned. I think a huge part of the issue with our education system is that students waste a tremendous amount of money once they get to college because they constantly switch their majors because they are unsure of what they truly want to do. I think it would be extremely beneficial to make an effective program that allows juniors and seniors in high school to get realistic experience in the field they are considering for their careers. This way they could decide if that was what they really wanted to do, instead of finding out too late, several courses or semesters into their major.

I also think high school seniors, assuming that my previous recommendation is in place, should be provided elective courses that help them proactively prepare for their decided major. I think giving students platforms to become true specialists in their future career fields, instead of forcing them to take mindless "prerequisite" and "general education" courses that serve hardly any purpose. Imagine how much more effectively we would function as a country if our students became legitimate experts on their careers and perfected their knowledge. Instead, graduates are currently coming out of college without a clue about what their jobs actually entail.

"While all of us adults — teachers, administrators and policymakers — have to do a better job of giving them the best schools and opportunities for their future, at the end of the day, they also need to step up and take responsibility for their education themselves." Even if we completely revamped the system, it would be useless if students weren't motivated and actually made an effort. However, I think if they didn't have to feel so confused and lost about blindly choosing a major, and therefore had the opportunity to thoroughly research what they wanted to do, that would significantly help with motivation.

  32. I agree with what Michelle Obama said about women's pay and education. Women in todays society have gained a lot more independence than in the past but we as a society need to continue and give them more respect. "We are focusing on things like financial aid, college counseling, academic and summer planning, and college visits. Our goal is to ensure that every student in this country understands how to pursue and complete their education" (Newsela. This just shows how we need to give out higher paying jobs to be equal.

  33. It is about time people began to realize that we must improve our educational system. I believe that education, however, should be tailored to each student individually. Albert Einstein once said that if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life thinking it's stupid. I agree with Mrs. Obama and her belief that everyone should have the right to pursue and know what higher education is and that it is an achievable goal. She stated that, "the good news is we know that all of this is possible" (Newsela).

  35. I am very glad to see that our president and the First Lady are trying their best to step up in the education topic. Our education system in the U.S. isn't near to the worlds best. Denmark and Sweden have some of the best systems in the world. I just fail to understand why we don't take some pointer from the other countries and follow what they are doing. They have the best education system, so why not follow that role model?

  36. I agree with Michelle Obama in that students should be encouraged to go to college. America absolutely needs to raise the bar on education. Too many students are being taught to merely pass a test here and there as opposed to understanding the information. Standardized tests need to improved to cater to both students that are rich and poor. I agree with Michelle Obama that students should be encouraged to go to college. As a country we must learn "the value of education" (Para 4).
