- US Election 2016
Speaking before a crowd of more than 11,000 students and locals at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, Donald Trump made no mention of Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
It was practically the first time he'd stopped talking about his presidential rival in the week since their once chummy relationship soured amid a flurry of exchanged insults and questioned political credentials.
Despite a storm of tweets over the weekend blasting Mr Cruz and a round of insult-laden television interviews on Sunday, it's perhaps not surprising that Mr Trump held his tongue at the university founded by the late evangelical leader Jerry Falwell in 1971.
Both Mr Cruz and Mr Trump are battling for the sizeable religious conservative vote in Iowa - which holds its first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses in two weeks - and it's a crowd that Mr Cruz usually seems more comfortable with.
Last March, Texas Senator Ted Cruz launched his bid for the Republican presidential nomination at Liberty University, speaking intimately about his faith and his father, a firebrand evangelical pastor.
Mr Trump, on the other hand, doesn't quite have the same religious bona fides, despite his best attempts. Last September, he proudly held up his childhood Bible at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, DC. And at one point during his hour-long speech at Liberty, he tried to cite a biblical passage about faith and liberty.
Unfortunately for Mr Trump, he referenced "Two Corinthians" instead of "Second Corinthians".
The crowd laughed.
"I always think it's entertaining when people try to throw the Bible into their speeches," Josh Schumacher, a student in his third year at Liberty, said after the speech. "I think it's sometimes just a ploy to get us to buy into what they're saying."
Mr Trump did benefit from a glowing introduction from Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr, however, who praised the businessman as one of the "greatest visionaries of our time" and likened him to his famous father.
"Trump can't be bought," he said. "He's not a puppet on a string like so many other candidates."
That could be read as a tacit boost of Mr Trump over Mr Cruz, as Mr Trump has recently attacked the Texas senator for being in the thrall of his big-ticket campaign donors.
Once upon a time, Mr Cruz and Mr Trump had nothing but kind words for each other. Mr Cruz invited Mr Trump to join him in speaking at a rally in front of the US Capitol, protesting the US-Iran nuclear arms agreement.
And while other candidates criticised the businessman for his call to temporarily close the US border to all Muslims, Mr Cruz was more restrained.
Mr Cruz said he wouldn't engage in a "cage match" with Mr Trump, tweeting that the New Yorker was "terrific".
But as the Iowa caucuses approach, and Mr Cruz and Mr Trump are locked in a battle for first place according to polls, the sparks have flown.
For the past week, Mr Trump has questioned Mr Cruz's eligibility for the presidency, given that he was born of an American mother on Canadian soil.
Mr Cruz has returned fire, saying Mr Trump embraces the liberal values of his New York City home town. Their acrimony was one of the headlines of the Republican presidential debate last Thursday.
Since then Trump has attacked the senator as a hypocrite and a "nasty man".
"Nobody likes him anywhere once they get to know him," Mr Trump said on Sunday. "He's got an edge that's not good. You can't make deals with people like that."
Mr Cruz responded on Monday by comparing Mr Trump unfavourably to conservative patron saint Ronald Reagan and saying he is unqualified for the presidency.
David Barton, who chairs a group supporting Mr Cruz, went one step further.
"Donald Trump's about-face, negative attacks on Ted Cruz are proof he has neither the temperament nor judgement to lead our country," he said in a statement. "It proves Trump is the ultimate opportunist."
Dylan Engel, Liberty student, said that he supports both Mr Cruz and Mr Trump, and finds the growing rivalry between the two upsetting.
"I like how outspoken Trump is," he said. "I believe today we need to fight political correctness. We're being torn apart from the inside."
He added, however, that he's impressed that Mr Cruz hasn't backed down from Mr Trump's attacks.
"Ted Cruz stood his ground," he said.
It seems the Trump-Cruz battle is just warming up.
I really have a strong dislike for Trump, and this proves even more he'll do whatever it takes to get his hands around the presidency. It's sad that he misquote the bible in front of the university- clearly not having such strong religious ties as he claims. It would scare me if Trump became president because i 100% agree with Obama;s state of the union speech in which he said that someone who bashes Muslims and vandalizes mosques would be stepping america back. Trump is the embodiment of racism and would be a horror, and a terrible representation of what our country stands for. Equality, liberty, and freedom of expression. We are one of the most diverse countries in the world and if Trumps ban on Muslims or people from certain countries would be implemented, it would be a disgrace to the country. I agree with the quote above which states "Donald Trump's about-face, negative attacks on Ted Cruz are proof he has neither the temperament nor judgement to lead our country"(BBC)
ReplyDeleteWhile running for a president no candidate should bash another. I haven't ever seen the need to attack the other candidate. If anything attacking another candidate like many of the people running this year makes them look weak. Almost like they need to bash the other to prove a point, but really they should just prove themselves as better candidate by expressing their opinions and plans for presidency.
ReplyDeleteWhile running for president, no candidate should put down another candidate by calling them out. Being a president means being a leader. In order to become the president of the United States you should not feel the need to defend yourself or attack others before presidency. Like Matthew said, the candidates should rather explain to the people why they would be the best choice to lead the United States.
ReplyDeleteTrump's methods of gaining support have been extreme in the recent events. His way of telling the people exactly how he wants to run the country without any sugarcoating are driving many away, but while also bringing some support. Recent polls have showed that he is in the lead, and this is concerning. Trump believes he can purchase his election like so many other politicians. He is described as "not a puppet on a string like so many other candidates" (Zurcher). This is both good and bad. He is consistent in what he wants, but also what he wants is detrimental to our country.
ReplyDeleteLasse Nordahl Per 6
Trump has been all over the news recently involving different issues. He clearly was not as religious as he claimed to be, because of how he misread the bible. Unfortunately for Mr Trump, he referenced "Two Corinthians" instead of "Second Corinthians". (BBC). I personally disagree with Trumps campaign and his views on many situations. Bashing on Muslims and threatening to get rid of them by building a wall does not represent America in a good way. If he really is leading the Republican polls, then people need to wake up and realize that Trump would be a very bad leader for our country. His judgement is bad and the fact that he has been bashing on another candidate proves that he is not fit to be a leader.
ReplyDeleteParagraph 17 states "Trump has attacked the senator as a hypocrite and a nasty man".For someone trying to become president its not a very good idea to talk poorly about the other running candidates. During Trumps speech at Liberty University he makes a reference to the bible. Although he did this, its hard to believe that hes not just doing this for public attention since he constantly is pushing other people down.

As somebody who could potentially be our president, it is not right for Trump to continuously bash others. I think Trump is not fit to be our president and lead our country."For the past week, Mr Trump has questioned Mr Cruz's eligibility for the presidency"(BBC). Instead of bashing others, he needs to gain more support from the people in other ways.
ReplyDeleteMorgan Siegel P.2
I think it's completely disrespectufl to bash another candidate while trying to run for president. Trump doing this makes him look bad and doesn't show his respect and capability of being able to lead our country."Donald Trump's about-face, negative attacks on Ted Cruz are proof he has neither the temperament nor judgement to lead our country," he said in a statement. ReplyDeleteper 4
As a possibility of our future president, I think Trump is completely out of place. Bashing other people, especially other presidential candidates, obviously gets attention but not in a positive way. Trump should be trying to get more support from people instead of harassing others. I think Trumps behavior is completely uncalled for, especially since he may actually become the president. Who honestly wants that for a president?
ReplyDeleteHannah Miller, P2
There is no respect for people running for president to bash other candidates. Trump is notorious for doing this. He gets a lot of attention but not in a good way at all. Trump needs to step up and set the right example. Nobody wants a president like this.

What Donald Trump did was rude and unnecessary. For someone who is running for president he is not showing how he could be a good president. I don't understand how he could be so high in the polls, Americans need to open their eyes and realize he is not a good candidate. He should not have bashed other candidates or misquote the Bible. Misquoting the Bible is sad and he is not setting a good example for America. If Donald Trump is serious about being president then he needs to think before he speaks.

Wake up America! Do we really want a man who puts down other candidates running our country? Or misreading the bible in front of the world? He clearly lied about being very religious. You cannot step on other people to get to the finish line. It is unfair, and he is definitely unfit to be our next leader.

Becoming the president of the United States is the most serious and important job in our country. The presidential election is not a joke and should be taken very seriously. The candidates seem to get lost in the competition during the campaigns, but we should't want the next President to be bashing others because this is a sign of immaturity and hate. Voters should think very carefully when choosing who they believe is best fit for running the United States of America.
ReplyDeleteI love Trump he's different, he's straight forward. I believe he's doing something right when everyone is against him, like bush and the republican party made commercials that are supposed to get people to hate this man, but for me it gave me more of a reason to like him. When need a more assertive president in the time we're in now, not like our tyrant of president right now, why he has some many followers is because they're sick and tired of the president we have now and want something different. Why does Trump get so much ridicule, when Hillary leaked top secret documents and if you've ever heard of the Clinton Russian Uranium Scandal, which was the sale of Uranium mines in the U.S to Russia which was approved by Hillary, so why doesn't Hillary get ridicule for theses things, they rarely come up. In a time of the "PC" era where everything someone says offends this person or hurts that person and ISIS which Obama called a Jb team that we don't have to worry about, but then they attacked the U.S, a strong president is needed in this time. If any of you have ever listened to Trump, he has good ideas just sometimes he needs to keep his mouth shut. Trump is self funded too, so he doesn't need backers, but other presidents do, and the backers of those presidents defiantly want something out of that backing that person, there not just throwing money at them for nothing, they'll want a favor, it's corrupt but definitely happens.

This feud between Trump and Cruz is proof that they are nothing more than people seeking to prove they are better than everyone else, but have to resort to putting other people down. Which could mean couple things. One, they don't actually have any good points about themselves, or Two, they haven't grown out of their diapers. It is obvious that they only care about winning the presidency because of this quote, "Once upon a time, Mr Cruz and Mr Trump had nothing but kind words for each other"(Zurcher). This means that, before they were in first, they didn't mind each other, but now that they are tied, it's king of the hill. The most ironic part is that they aren't even following some of the simplest pieces of advice from the Bible.

The Republican Party has shown time and time again their passion about such unrelated and unimportant topics such as religion. I would hope such things as the bible would never be brought up in a POLITICAL discussion. There is too much time being wasted talking about pointless topics such as religion and scandal. Attacking another candidate is such a illegitimate, petty way of gathering votes. Trump and many other republican candidates focus so much on unrelated topics and slandering other candidates that it is impossible to support them.
ReplyDeleteWe all know that candidates in an election always go at each other because they are running against each other. Their is also a limit to when you start going overboard like what I think Trump is doing. He needs to think more about Hillary than Ted Cruz or any of the other candidates. When you start saying nonsense like "Nobody likes him anywhere once they get to know him"(Trump), it starts to become a roasting session than a political debate.
ReplyDeleteI have no respect for Donald Trump whatsoever. He is flat out inconsiderate towards so many other people and it seems that everything he says is a lie. He isn't competing with the other candidates at this point, he's stepping on them and trash talking about them in order to draw more attention to himself. It was brought to my attention that "Trump has attacked the senator as a hypocrite and a nasty man", proving that he used name-calling as a way to further his progress, however I think this will be one of the many pitfalls of his run.
ReplyDeleteGina Tarry Period 4
I never liked the way of how Trump would always talk about all the other candidates in such a horrible manner. But then I figured out that it is what one has to do if they want to win. Then after reading this and turns out they used to be friends, "Mr Cruz invited Mr Trump to join him in speaking at a rally in front of the US Capitol, protesting the US-Iran nuclear arms agreement"(The Trump-Cruz feud gets nasty). Trump basically started to put negative words against Cruz, someone who trusted him. This shows who our real friends are.

DeleteTrump is trying to be something that he is not. Just the fact that he "referenced to it as 'Two Corinthians' instead of 'Second Corinthians'" (Trump) shows that he has no idea about that stuff. If he were even a little religious he would have gotten that right. Instead he uses it just to sway voters to his side, even though he has no stock in it. For many religious people it is insulting.

After reading this article,I am going to be honest and say I don't know much on Ted Cruz other than he is one of the candidates for president, and not even much on Donald Trump other than his statement which was mention in the article was "And while other candidates criticised the businessman for his call to temporarily close the US border to all Muslims, Mr Cruz was more restrained." (The Trump-Cruz feud gets nasty (BBC)) which honestly I can't blame the other candidates for saying something about that statement, what also surprised me in that quote was why did Cruz restrained himself? Overall I thought the feud between the two candidates was a bit too much, and was unnecessary in my view it just made them look bad.

I’m not a big fan of Donald Trump. As a guy running to be our future president it’s ridiculous that he’s bashing another presidential candidate. “Donald Trump's about-face, negative attacks on Ted Cruz are proof he has neither the temperament nor judgement to lead our country,” Do we really want him as our president if he has the audacity to bash another candidate?
ReplyDelete-Haley Esquibel Per: 1
God damn Trump is an idiot. I think the problem many have with him is that he addresses politics like a business. It simply does not work. Business you have to be bold, can make broad statements and focus solely on majorities and be very successful. Albeit in politics, of any nature, it is the intricacies and minorities that matter the most. You can not tolerate acceptable losses, nor can you have martyrs. If Trump became president he will earn only one achievement: Shortest Presidential Term ever. Additionally have you seen the massive amount of hatred for Trump coming from England. The Queen said she will "take back" America if he is elected. If our president alienates our largest ally he should not and can not be our President.
ReplyDeleteI think that Donald Trump is using all the wrong ways to gain votes from people in the future. Calling people out and pointing out their flaws doesn't make you look better. "For the past week, Mr Trump has questioned Mr Cruz's eligibility for the presidency, given that he was born of an American mother on Canadian soil.", Donald Trump is being immature about the situation. Also he was clearly lacking knowledge when he referred to it as "Two Corinthians".

I disagree with so many things Trump has done. I strongly agree with David Barton when he states that, "Donald Trump's about-face, negative attacks on Ted Cruz are proof he has neither the temperament nor judgement to lead our country,". I believe that a person running to be the president of a country, shouldn't be calling people names such as "a nasty man". Trump's name calling almost comes across as childish; Trump is trying to gain voters by making accusations about the other candidates. I do not believe that a man who still gives other grown men names, is a proper fit for president.
ReplyDeleteI think Donald Trump is going about this all wrong. He seems to be focusing his presidential campaign on attacking the other candidates rather than expressing his ideas and plans. This is going to give the people a bad impression of him, and he will be less likely to be elected. He really needs a reality check. The fact that he referenced "Two Corinthians" instead of "Second Corinthians" just shows that he probably hasn't stepped inside a church in his life (The Trump-Cruz feud gets nasty (BBC)). In my opinion, he needs to recheck his priorities or he will run his presidential campaign into the ground
ReplyDeleteTrump has different methods to gain support. And it appears to be working in some ways for him. But I do not believe that either candidate should be putting each other down. There is a difference between using facts to show truth and straight up calling them out. Using facts to prove a point is okay, but it does not seem as though they were using facts. I do not believe he was going about this the right way for someone who could potentially run our country. I think there are occasions he goes too far in what he says and his approach may not be the best. Some of the points he tries to make may be valid, but there may be a better way to express his opinions and win the votes of voters.

I do not follow the Presidential campaign as much as I probably should, but I have heard quite a lot about Donald Trump and his campaigning. I know that he is racist and very outspoken about his ideas. In my opinion, Trump will do whatever it takes to win the Presidential election. For example, in the article titled "The Trump-Cruz feud gets nasty," BBC discusses the speech that Trump gave at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Donald Trump tried to convince the audience of his religious faith, but made a slight mistake. BBC writes, "Unfortunately for Mr Trump, he referenced "Two Corinthians" instead of "Second Corinthians," (BBC para. 7).

In my opinion, Trump is a fascist that has judged so many people and races unjustly. I believe that he has used frustration and anger as a tool to gain followers falsely. Being as hostile as he is it surprised me that he ceased to attack his fellow rivals. "It was practically the first time he'd stopped talking about his presidential rival in the week since their once chummy relationship soured amid a flurry of exchanged insults and questioned political credentials" (BBC). I still wonder how he is leading the polls with his preposterous persona. I hope the American people can come together to make a sensible decision for the next president of the United States.

Being the president and running for the presidency is a difficult and stressful job. For one you are constantly being scrutinized for every little thing you do and even things you have done in the past. Running for president also means you are going to get constant criticism from voters along with your fellow running mates. With this being said only thick skinned people can run for president. You have to be able to stand with full confidence in front of the entire nation for your beliefs. I do not think that Donald Trump bashing Ted Cruz is a big deal, it is just simply politics. The media seems to be centered completely on Donald Trump. There are never "clean" and "nice" political campaigns. No matter what it is there isn't anything in politics that isn't messy. So often people claim that Donald Trump isn't smart and is a joke for a presidential candidate. However, I don't believe this is an accurate assumption either. It could be portrayed that supporting Donald Trump as a president isn't acceptable. However unlike the other candidates he is very unique, he has no fear in being "politically incorrect" with not much of a "filter" sort of speak. He also stands for the little people and speaks up for the concerns of the middle class. Trump also has plans to stop illegal immigration which has caused a huge a massive economic disruption and plagued America for way too long, as the issue is constantly overlooked. As many would say he is an unreliable source because he is looked at as a very blunt and rude person. This is not necessarily accurate considering he is a man of morals. Many are quick to judge his silly twitter feuds and deem him as incompetent but as far as his past he has had no brushes with the law which is admirable considering he could easily be caught in a scandal due to his background in business. Along with picking a president we are picking a first family. Trump's family is picture perfect as even with two divorcees and children growing up in the spotlight we have heard very little conflict. Trump is very misunderstood and only doing his best to win the election just like his fellow running mates. - Sabrina Shaw

ReplyDeleteThe American people like Donald Trump because of his promises for the future, his speeches and that he is different than other candidates. Donald trump proposes mass deportations, promises to make America great again(maybe with his hair products?), blames immigrants for America’s problems and thinks Muslims should wear a “special ID”, sounds like Adolf Hitler to me, in fact, That’s how it all started with Hitler. The fact that Trump tried to cite a passage about faith and liberty and made a mistake shows that he only did it for attention and didn't care about what he was saying. Trump also was attacking Cruz even though they were friendly toward each other before the polls, and were together speaking about Iran's Nuclear Agreement. I don't believe trump should even be considered for the presidency. He not only has had no prior experience with being involved in political offices but he uses extremely hateful speech toward anyone that puts him in an uncomfortable situation. He bashes other competitors for no reason. He only gains followed by using blanket statements regarding problems in the United States.

I cannot support Donald Trump in his quest to fire everybody that isn't white. All jokes aside, his racist, sexist, and willingness to personally attack people for things they cannot control, (race, place of birth, ect.) deter me from ever supporting him. As well as his simple lack of eligibility for being president. He has no political experience, and the only reason he has gotten this far was from his own money and exploiting people's fears. He is using the exact same tactics Hitler used in Germany to gain power, and that caused WWII. I don't want to live in a world where Mexicans and Muslims are put in concentration camps. I want to be able to see my father when I come home. I do not support Mr. Cruz either. I don't support any of these candidates, I'd rather have a third term of Obama.

Following politics and participating in Youth and Government I feel I have a strong political sense I can draw from. While Mr. Trump has a good business structure, he is too outspoken to run our country. He has no respect for others, it is one thing to state your mind but it is much another to disrespect many. "Unfortunately for Mr Trump, he referenced "Two Corinthians" instead of "Second Corinthians"- Trump is attempting to appeal religiously to the population but his lack of knowledge in this topic does just the opposite. Trump likes go generalize all people of certain ethnicity into certain categories which is downright disrespectful and shaming. Trump is a good business man but not fit to run this country.
