SAN BERNARDINO, California – Just steps outside where a candlelit vigil was held to honor 14 people killed in a violent blaze of bullets, a poster advertised an upcoming gun show.
“WE’VE GOT AMMO!” the banner read.
“BUY-SELL-TRADE!”
The neon-orange signs were splashed across San Bernardino’s roughest looking neighborhoods, covering the blighted and vacant buildings that point to the city’s steep decline.
The sound of gunfire is not foreign to these parts. Even before Syed Farook andTashfeen Malik stormed an office party and unleashed the deadliest shooting attack in years, gun violence has gripped the city in the form of gang fights that spill out into the streets.
“Shootings are kind of an everyday ‘oh, it happened again,’” said 22-year-old Jalyn Sandoval, an emergency responder for San Bernardino County.
On the national scale, calls for tighter gun laws in the wake of Wednesday’s attack grow strong. Standing from the Oval Office on Sunday night, President Barack Obama made an impassioned plea that even suspected terrorists should not be able to buy guys in the United States as they can now.
In San Bernardino, there’s silence. Faith groups hold prayer vigils. Survivors and the families of victims embrace one another in what sense of safety they can find in their own homes. Even for a city that has wrestled with the carnage of gun violence, few here are talking about reining it in.
Complicating the matter is the fact that terrorism is the likely cause behind the shooting on the Inland Regional Center, which specializes in offering services to the physically disabled. The assailants in the attack had converted their garage into a bomb-making factory. Law enforcement authorities suspect that the couple were gearing up for multiple attacks.
“It’s not just guns – it’s people. I’d like to feel that I can protect my family to some extent,” said David Lacasse, 39, from nearby Riverside County. “I don’t want my own candlelit vigil.”
In many ways Obama was right when he said in October that mass casualties to gun violence had somehow grown “routine.” Lacasse readily admits that he wasn’t surprised to see a mass shooting touch his town. On a smaller scale, households here have grown accustomed to pain of everyday gun violence. Lacasse said just last week his 18-year-old son lost a close friend to a stray bullet.
California already has some of the tightest gun laws in the country. Licensed residents must be certified and go through a 10-day waiting period before they can buy a gun. Semi-automatic guns and magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammo are banned entirely.
Residents who agree that it should be more difficult for criminals to obtain guns are angered by the realities that they see in their day to day – gangs are getting their hands on weapons anyway.
“It has taken a lot of young lives,” said April Jones, who works with her husband in helping underserved communities in San Bernardino. “Children are not able to play, to be free and walk out the door and be safe.”
The situation has grown worse since city officials filed for bankruptcy protection in 2012, trying to dig out of a dire financial situation that was crumbling under rapid foreclosure rates and depleted sources of tax revenue. Public services took a major hit, slashing the police force from more than 350 officers down to just over 260.
Meanwhile the street gangs that had left Los Angeles were now gathering a firm grip on communities just to the east. Crime and homicide rates skyrocketed. San Bernardino was already down by the time two gunmen went on a shooting rampage this week.
“We’ve taken a lot of hits lately,” Lt. Mike Madden, one of the first responders to the San Bernardino massacre, said during a press conference. “Some justified, much of it not justified, and it takes a toll, it takes a toll on all cops.”
Just a few days out from the violent terror spree, the community is still adjusting to what has become a new normal.
As a financial aid administrator at a local community college, Melissa Contreras has gone through a number of active-shooter trainings at work. But this shooting hit a little too close to home for her. One of Contereras’ neighbors across the street, a mother to a 22-month toddler, was gunned down in Wednesday’s shooting.
“I have never in all 39 years in my life thought to pick up a gun,” Contreras said. “But now, I want to sign up for a class to learn and train to use one.”
San Bernardino is not talking, or using gun control, because they realized in the past gun control laws have not worked. I believe it would be a good start for “suspected terrorists not being able to buy gun in the United States as they can now” (Obama). I agree that it was a good idea to have a candlelit vigil to support the ones who did not make it in this shooting.

The fact that gun shooting have become such a regular to our country is baffling. And I don’t think tight regulations on gun laws are going to prevent a situation like this. I’ve honestly run out of ideas on how to prevent mass shootings, because no matter what’s being done in attempt to stop them, gun shootings still reoccur. “The sound of gunfire is not foreign to these parts” (Sakuma). When I read this, it made me surprised, but at the same time, not surprised. Gunfire should not be a common sound within a community; however, nowadays it’s become more frequent. Violent outbursts like these need to be prevented, because it’s so heartbreaking to hear all the casualties in each terror attack.

Guns and gun violence is an issue that will never go away, no matter how many laws and restrictions are placed there will always be somebody that feels ' the law does not apply to them.' It is very sad to think that for some people, “The sound of gunfire is not foreign to these parts”(Sakuma). No person should have to live in the constant fear of being shot, or to have your neighbor,"convert their garage into a bomb-making factory"(Sakuma). The tragedy of this mass shooting is very sad, and many people hope more are not to follow.
ReplyDeleteNo matter what people do, gun violence will never go away. its a problem that restricting gun laws won't help. The only thing that gun laws will do will make american citizens not be able to defend themselves. In places like taxes, where people can open carry gun, the amount of mass shootings is very low. This is because no one is gonna go and start shooting people if everyone they're shooting also has a gun."The sound of gunfire is not foreign to these parts." this quote talks about how people are living in fear of getting shot because they cannot defend themselves.
ReplyDeletePersonally I'm totally for guns and all but our laws should definitely become stricter. Also our immigration laws should become stricter. I mean these people basically walked right into the country undetected. These two people shattered a community by themselves. As this article states,"In San Bernardino, there’s silence. Faith groups hold prayer vigils. Survivors and the families of victims embrace one another in what sense of safety they can find in their own homes." My thoughts are with the families who lost their loved ones.
ReplyDeleteI do not think anybody should be talking about gun control. There are many bigger problems this should bring up other than gun control. “It’s not just guns – it’s people. I’d like to feel that I can protect my family to some extent¨ (Lacasse). This proves that it is people that we need to handle. Also if the residents don't have weapons, how are they going to protect themselves. My condenses go out to the families that had lost a loved one. We need to focus on the problem that this might be a act of terrorism, not that guns were involved.
ReplyDeleteIf you ban guns terrorists will still find a way to get them. Almost all terrorists or people from mass shooting, their guns were not even registered so how will this law prevent them from cheating the system. Many of people are mentally unstable to as this quote shows, "It’s not just guns – it’s people. I’d like to feel that I can protect my family to some extent¨ (Lacasse) .I agree it was a good idea to hold a candlelight service for those. It is very unfortunate for the ones that passed and didn't do anything to deserve it.
ReplyDeleteAccording to thefederalist.com Knives killed five times more than rifles but, we do not talk about knife control? Knife is used as a tool to cut food and etc. so we overlook these stabbings guns our the same. Guns our a tool to defend yourself from the Government if we were to overthrow them and if someone attacks us. If we get rid of guns they will still find a way in just like drugs. According to Bruno Switzerland has a very low crime-rate and there is a gun in every house since every man 20-30 must server in the military and when they are past the age of 30 they still keep their rifle.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the issue of guns and gun control will not just go away no matter how tight the restrictions or laws get. Terrorists and people who want to will find a way to get guns, or already will have guns. The people who actually need guns to protect their families will have a disadvantage. I think San Bernardino not talking about gun control is fine.
ReplyDeleteHannah Miller, p2
i think some people should be able to carry guns like the people that are lisencd to have them. and the thing that
ReplyDeletehappend is so bad made me mad. obamas gun control is only going to take the guns out of those who us to protect and the bad guys dont care they will have them no matter what there bad they dont follow the laws and i am praying for those familys
I agree with David Lacasse that “It’s not just guns – it’s people"(MSNBC). I think that the problem is not just going to go away by tightening laws. Terrorists and bad people will still find away to get guns. It is so sad that "households here have grown accustomed to pain of everyday gun violence". It should not be that way. People should not have to be afraid to go outside or let their kids play outside. These shootings need to be ended and not keep being a common occurrence.
ReplyDeleteCompletely banning guns will not solve anything in this case. The more rules, the more times the rules will be broken. However, I do believe that the rules surrounding gun control needs to be more strict while still allowing guns."The sound of gunfire is not foreign to these parts" shows how often shooting happen, mostly with automatic machine guns that is not necessary to protect themselves as guns should be used.

ReplyDeleteDavid Lacasse said that "it's not just guns -- it's people." I fully agree. No matter what gun restrictions are put in place, people will get their hands on guns. Acts of terrorism are due to crazy people, not guns. The war over gun control has been raging for the last decade. The only way to solve that problem is by therapy for people with mental illnesses.
I believe that increasing our gun controls will not change anything or solve any of the current issues in the United States. The problem is people. It is terrible that shootings have became an everyday event in the United States. We should not have to worry about our family and friends safety while attending a movie, a museum, or park. Safety is the United States number one issue regarding gun control. If you ban guns those that are using them to harm others will still find a way to get one.

Gun control is something that I feel is too late to have. America is riddled with guns and almost everyone has them. The problem with enacting the control, is that people won't be able to defend themselves, criminals won't obey the gun law. People need a means of protections and it's even a constitutional right. Though I do feel restrictions on types of guns and stricter gun rules, we should be able to bear arms.

I think that having no gun laws in San Bernardino is good and bad. In one way people can think of it as having gun restrictions hasn't done anything, so why not try something out. Even though it is risking the lives of many people, San Bernardino has not even put on a gun restriction even though everyday there are shootings. When David Lacasse says “It’s not just guns – it’s people" it shows that it doesn't matter if there is a gun restriction of not, shootings are going to happen if the people want it to whether there's a law or not(MSNBC).

After reading the article, I first would agree with David Lascasse when he said “It’s not just guns – it’s people. I’d like to feel that I can protect my family to some extent,”(Lascasse). It's not just the guns that are dangerous but the person who controls the gun. Although I like the idea of banning guns, but it could violate the second amendment which allows "people to keep and bear arms" (second amendment), although I think there should be something done, there have been way too many recent gun shootings and innocent lives are at risk, even in the article it quotes "San Bernardino residents react to Obama’s address: ‘We’re still scared’"( Nobody is talking about gun control in San Bernardino. Here’s why.) if they said there scared, that should be an indicator that something should be done. Overall I hope they find the solution soon to hopefully prevent shootings that are unnecessary

I agree with David Lacasse that “It’s not just guns – it’s people"(MSNBC). I believe that this will most definitely not stop what people are doing with guns. The bad people will still be having these weapons and just taking the law away to bear arms will just make people more vulnerable.
ReplyDeleteHere is what everyone doesn't understand. the building that was shot up was a no gun zone meaning people with guns can not take them in. So obviously those are the kinds of building that are going to get shot up. But imagine if everyone had a gun. Terrorists would think twice about going to shoot up a building because they could die on the spot before they kill one person.
ReplyDelete“It’s not just guns – it’s people"(MSNBC).This says everything. People are the reason for all these shootings not the guns. These guns aren't firing and killing people, them are pulling the trigger and shooting the people they want to kill. I think making a rule won't change a thing in these peoples mind on having a gun with them. p.2
ReplyDeleteI believe making laws about gun control will not work because many people own them for sports such as hunting and others use them as personal defense just in case of incident like San Bernardino. Also they will have to change the Constitution because the second amendment states everyone has the right to bear arms. This following quote states ¨Its not just guns-Its people"(MSNBC) This states that the guns are not the problem its just the people using them, the guns don't kill the people it the people using the gun. I believe making a rule or law that takes guns away will cause more problems and wont change a thing.
ReplyDeletePeriod 2
I believe that gun control will not benefit our country. “It’s not just guns – it’s people"(MSNBC). Gun violence will happen no matter what. Restricting guns all together will not help anyone. In most cases the people committing these horrible crimes get their guns illegally, so restricting guns will only prevent normal people from getting guns for recreational activities or protection.
ReplyDeleteGun and violence issues will not be solved anytime soon just because of the nature of both sides of each argument about gun control and the different stances on it all throughout politics. People who did try to push gun control in the past are starting to be frustrated at the fact that the criminals still have access to guns as said here, "Residents who agree that it should be more difficult for criminals to obtain guns are angered by the realities that they see in their day to day – gangs are getting their hands on weapons anyway" (Amanda Sakuma). In my opinion gun control doesn't work because you are only limiting the public to their access to guns and not criminals because they will always find a way to get guns. The public should protect the public and shouldn't be limited to using melee combat while trying to defend against criminals who bear arms. Ryan Brown Period 2
ReplyDeleteI think that guns and gun violence is an issue in our country and will not go away. No matter whether you restrict guns or not, the people will always find a way to get a hold of them. People get guns illegally and I think that is wrong. “It’s not just guns – it’s people. I’d like to feel that I can protect my family to some extent,” said David Lacasse, 39, from nearby Riverside County. This is talking about the people innocently trying to protect their families from criminals and it should only be allowed for families to have licensed permits to own a gun and not illegally. Brandon Marshall Period 4
ReplyDeleteI do not think that gun control will work for many reasons. Some are many people already have guns and others have them for hunting or to feel safe. Yet having guns to try to feel safe doesn't even work anymore because no one is ever safe when someone has a gun. Yes, i will admit its not a gun that is unsafe itself, but a person that is behind the gun holding it, that will make the decision to pull the trigger. It should be just a little bit harder to get a gun and maybe raise the age to get them so people who just turned 18 still not fully matured cant handle one or for criminals who just got out of jail, they wouldn't be able to get one so easy.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is good that we have gun control because we need them to defend ourselves. Its not the gun that's the problem, its the person shooting it.“It’s not just guns – it’s people. I’d like to feel that I can protect my family to some extent,”(Lacasse) Without guns, we are very vulnerable. If someone breaks into your house, you won't have anything to defend yourself with. I think that you should only be able to get a gun through a permit though. Guns can fall into the wrong persons hands. If they ban guns, there would just be more guns and laws would be broken."In many ways Obama was right when he said in October that mass casualties to gun violence had somehow grown “routine.”(Msnbc) And we need guns to be able to hunt.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kyle. I think it is good to have some form of gun control. For some people guns are just in case of an intruder or in a bad situation. If they are misused then catastrophic things can happen. For example, "Lacasse said just last week his 18-year-old son lost a close friend to a stray bullet" (Amanda Sukuma). This could have been prevented if people had been more responsible.
DeleteCompletely banning guns will not solve anything in this case. The more rules, the more times the rules will be broken. People always find a way around the system so more rules isn't the right decision. "The sound of gunfire is not foreign to these parts" (Nobody is talking about gun control). People don't always use guns to protect themselves, but taking away guns from people isn't going to fix the problem.

David Lacasse said that "it's not just guns,it's people.". This explains a lot of the problem. I fully agree with this statement. Guns are dangerous, there is no way to argue this, but guns don't shoot themselves, people shoot them. Therefore, people shoot people. I think people don't have that concept down. I fear that some people are too focused on the danger of guns that they aren't looking at the people who have the guns. Having a gun is a good tool when handled properly, if not they can become dangerous.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we should have guns. This could have been prevented if we had stricter gun laws. Also, we should not let people that are on the no-fly list, be able to purchase a lethal weapon. It should not even be a question that a terrorist on the US watch list, is allowed to by a weapon. It is absurd that we allow this. It’s not just guns – it’s people. I’d like to feel that I can protect my family to some extent,”(Lacasse). If the people are killing people, then why are we giving these people guns to do it. "people kill people, not guns." That really doesn't make sense, we should not give crazy people tools to commit their thoughts. If you are looking to protect your family, you can seek less lethal alternatives. A tazer, or pepper spray, these are things that can defend you or your family without resulting in a lethal ending. In the UK, the last terrorist attack was by a man with a knife. He only injured 2 people. This is without guns. In the US, the last terrorist attack was at San Bernardo. 14 people killed with many people injured. This was with a gun. See the difference?

Guns have been a problem more today then they have ever been. If we forbid guns, people who want them will get their hand's on them. Also more people will even be getting them if they are illegal. In this quote, "Children are not able to play, to be free and walk out the door and be safe"(Jones). Has it really come to where that parents are too scared to have their kids run outside and have fun? Are we going to have to come to the point in order to have the children play outside that they have to wear bullet proof vest?
ReplyDeleteAs it has been said and heard before, gun control is a big problem. Guns are too easy to get a hold of. I agree with the statement, "“Children are not able to play, to be free and walk out the door and be safe.”" (April Jones) Because of the gun problem, and the lack of control, children are not safe. I'm sure parents do not feel as comfortable allowing their children to walk to a park, school, or a friend's house, alone. There needs to be a stricter process on obtaining a gun. If there were stricter policies, then shootings like this would not be as big a problem.
ReplyDeleteI think that in San Bernardino, there should be a restriction on guns. If there is an increase in shootings in this area, it would only make sense to limit the amount of people that are allowed to own them.“Shootings are kind of an everyday ‘oh, it happened again,'"(Sandoval). Going outside and shooting someone should not be as easy as it is. This area is no longer safe for children to play and have a normal life.
ReplyDeleteI think that more places then just San Bernardino need a better gun restriction policy. The amount of shootings that have happened in the United States is terrible. I agree that “suspected terrorists not being able to buy gun in the United States as they can now” (Obama) but terrorists aren't the only people that do these kind of things. I think mentally ill people should not be allowed to buy a gun as well if they are not able to take care of them self in a they should be able to if they have a gun.

"It's not just guns, it's people" I completely agree with this statement. Guns aren't the problem. If someone wants to get ahold of a gun, they will. The only problem with gun control is that if someone who is an honest citizen trying to defend their own well being they won't be able to. The distribution of guns should be based off of common sense, as in mentally ill people should not have guns amongst other various groups of people. We don't need to start with gun control. The real issue is working on bettering our world and coming together as people to stand up against the bad that effects our world. - Sabrina Shaw Per. 4
ReplyDeleteI think that the shooting that happened in San Bernadino was utterly horrific. The fact that these criminals can get guns is bad but ultimately we cant stop it. What we need to stop is the people, not the guns. You are taking out the problem if you take out the people that use the guns. "It's not just guns-it's people(David Lacasse). I totally agree with him, why limit the lethals when you can take it all out at once.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with the whole gun debate is it's not about the guns. If the United States were some how able to eliminate all guns everywhere, terrorists would find other ways to kill people. Blaming the shootings on the guns is like blaming Americas Obese problem on utensils. “'It’s not just guns – it’s people. I’d like to feel that I can protect my family to some extent,' said David Lacasse."
ReplyDeleteTruman Andrus-Period 6
I agree that the idea of controlling the distribution and accessibility to guns is necessary though I do not think that making guns illegal will decrease crimes and deaths caused by guns. If guns were made illegal to public access, then people who really wanted to could just buy guns illegally or they would find new ways to harm others and participate in crime. It isn't the guns that cause the most damage but the people using them, I agree with those who state that the right to bear arms is written in the constitution so it should not be taken away but I also think that times have changed and gun laws should be made stricter.
ReplyDeleteSarah Moghaddam period 1
I think that controlling gun distribution and the access people have to guns is necessary but people will still find ways to get a hold of guns and use them for good and bad purposes. They should make other laws to prevent more crimes especially with guns, but just restricting gun control is not going to do much.
ReplyDeleteKaitlyn Guevarra

I agree that they should control the distributions of selling guns, but I Don't think the guns should be illegal. Because even if guns would be illegal, terrorists would still find another way to kill citizens. Its not the guns who kill the people its the terrorists who kill the citizens. "It's not the guns- it's people." (David Lacasse). I think that in San Berdino should have gun restrictions because terrorists like these would strike again if there are no restrictions.
ReplyDeleteI think that controlling guns is a good thing but I don't think they should be illegal. I think people will always find ways to get ahold of guns. If anything banning shouldn't be the solution but make it harder to get ahold of would be better. I think it would better if people did stop talking about it fully, as it does cause problems and lots of controversy
ReplyDeleteWhenever a shooting happens its never the guns fault, its the users fault. David Lacasse said that "it's not just guns,it's people." I agree with David. People need to learn how to use gun appropriately and not to think guns are used for anything they want. It's sad to know that children are not able to walk or play around their neighborhood without worrying about getting shot at. “Children are not able to play, to be free and walk out the door and be safe”(Sakuma). Guns are a part of this problem but the big focus is on the people with their finger on the trigger.
ReplyDeleteMass shootings or killings are always terrible. I do not really have any ideas on how to stop them. I do believe that it is not the guns that are then problem but it is it the people. "it's not just guns -- it's people"(David Lacasse). I agree with this quote by David Lacasse because he is saying how it is people that are danderous not just guns.
ReplyDeleteKyle Brown P.6
I strongly believe that guns aren't the problem as Kyle Brown stated above. I think that if more people had guns, then the less mass shootings the US would have. These acts of violence occur, due to the fact that the criminal knows that the general public don't carry guns with them therefore it creates easy targets. If people that worked at this facility had guns in this situation once they saw a shooter they could've stepped up and shot them before 14 people were killed.
ReplyDeleteHow horrific is it that gun attacks are "a common occurance"? This does reveal that tighter gun laws will not be the solution since California has some of these strictest gun laws. There must be some effective way to significantly reduce gun violence. More security may be a good start to the solution.
ReplyDeleteI find it appalling that now a days we do see gun violence and mass shootings as the norm. As Jalyn Sandoval said "Shootings are kind of an everyday 'oh, it happened again'." It is absolutely unbelievable that every couple days now we hear about some type of gun violence. Whether it's a shooting spout side a home from an argument gone wrong, to a cop shooting some civilian, to a mass shooting in San Bernardino. I used to believe the saying that goes "guns don't kill people, people kill people", now my vi was are sloghtly altered. Yes, people do kill people, but I believe that adding a gun to the equation is the equivalent of just adding fuel to the fire. When it is asked "should we have more gun control laws?" or "should guns be outlawed?" I think, when will we be convinced to make what should be a simple decision. Are hundreds and thousand of lives worth the risk solely because we as a people are indecisive? How many more people will have to die, terrorist or civilian, such a horrible death...
ReplyDeleteIt is truly awful to hear that all of these gun killings and violence keeps re-occurring. But there's no easy solution to this problem unfortunately. As Jalyn Sandoval said "Shootings are kind of a everyday oh, it happened again." The fact that people would say this just proves that it has been happening so often. Now from my opinion it is the person behind the gun causing the issue not the weapon it's self. " It's not just guns it's people" (David Lacasse). This quote states what I'm feeling about men and woman having guns. The straight up fact is no matter what we will never be able to control people with guns or if people should have them.

Blaming the shootings on the guns is like blaming Americas Obese problem on utensils. “'It’s not just guns – it’s people. I’d like to feel that I can protect my family to some extent,' said David Lacasse."
ReplyDeleteI believe that the people of San Bernardino are used to this "gun culture" that a lot of America is under. In my opinion, I believe that we really need to make stricter gun laws, mainly in the police force and the people. In so many other countries where guns are completly banned for civillian use, there is a MUCH lower murder rate per capita than that of the United States. Really the only reason guns are legal im America is because its always been this way and no one wants change. I think that these school shooting are really just a matter of "how many times are we going to let this happen" because stricter gun laws truly are the solution.
ReplyDeleteGetting rid of guns will not solve the problem. If a terrorist has a goal to kill, he/she will find a way to do so. Knives are dangerous yet we use them in our daily routines? Yes making stricter laws will decrease the percentage of death but there are so many other tools one could use to kill. Stop blaming a gun, it's silly and foolish.
