Week #9 (10/19-10/23)- With Violent Clashes On The Rise, Israel Builds Wall In East Jerusalem (NPR)

Update at 6:13 p.m. ET: Deadly Attack At Israeli Bus Station
Israeli police say at least 10 people are wounded and another two are dead, after an attacker opened fire at a bus station in the southern city of Beersheba Sunday. An Israeli soldier and the gunman, an Arab attacker, according to the AP, were killed.
NPR's Emily Harris, reporting from Jerusalem, tells our Newscast unit:
"The wounded also included security forces — more have been deployed in public places. Police say the attacker in fact took a weapon from a soldier after shooting him, then used that. Images from police show windows of the bus station shot out and blood on the floor.
A bystander, an Eritrean man, was also mistakenly shot and injured by security forces, Emily says.

Our original post continues:
In a sign that tensions continue to simmer between Israelis and Palestinians, the Israeli police Sunday began erecting a concrete barrier between a Jewish and Arab neighborhood in east Jerusalem, according to the Associated Press.
This comes a day after Israeli officials say five stabbing or attempted stabbings of Israelis by Palestinians assailants took place in Jerusalem and in the West Bank on Saturday. Officials say most of the people targeted appear to be members of the security forces.
At least four of the assailants were killed, according to the Washington Post.
Also taking place on Sunday, the Israeli military has removed at least 30 Jews, the AP reports, who "descended upon the Joseph's Tomb compound in Nablus, a site revered by Jews as the tomb of the biblical figure Joseph."
The wire service also reports, the Israeli military said the group had no permits to be there. When the group arrived, they were confronted by Palestinians and violent clashes erupted.
In an earlier report from Jerusalem, NPR's Emily Harris told our Newscast unit that Palestinians on Friday set fire to Joseph's Tomb. The shrine is in a Palestinian city in the West Bank and the Israeli government restricts Jews from praying there without protection from the military, Emily reports:
"A few days ago, Palestinians set fire to the tomb, which has also happened during tense times in the past. Palestinian security forces dispersed that crowd and put the fire out. [Saturday] night, Jewish religious students went to the tomb, without military permission. They later told Israeli police Palestinians attacked them, accusing Palestinian security forces of participating in the fight. In the end, Israeli forces detained five of the Jewish students to question them about illegally entering the area."
According to Reuters, at least four cities in Israel have temporarily banned Arab laborers from working in their schools, as the spike in Palestinian street attacks have surged in recent weeks. Reuters also reports:
"Israel's cabinet also imposed more security measures on Sunday after further Palestinian stabbings this weekend, widening police stop-and-frisk powers that will effectively allow them to search anyone on the street.
"A party representing Israel's Arab minority called the municipalities' edicts 'racist'.
"Israel's Interior Ministry, which oversees the municipalities, said it appealed to 'all mayors to continue to act with respect and equality towards all their workers, irrespective of religion, ethnicity or gender'. It did not ask them to repeal the restrictions.
"Forty-one Palestinians and seven Israelis have died in recent street violence, which was in part triggered by Palestinians' anger over what they see as increased Jewish encroachment on Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque compound."
Secretary of State John Kerry announced on Sunday he would be meeting separately with both Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the coming week. The meetings are part of the U.S. effort to restore calm.

  1. The constant war between Israel and Palestine have increased over the past few days. "Israeli police say at least 10 people are wounded and another two are dead, after an attacker opened fire at a bus station in the southern city of Beersheba Sunday" (NPR). Lots of stabbings have occurred and many people are just tired of the tension. A lot of the attacks are not needed and are not benefiting either country in any way. I am glad that the US is trying to help Israel, but they better make sure that they don't get in the middle of the Israelis and Palestinians.

  2. I believe that the US getting involved in this could be beneficial but also dangerous. The attack resulted in death and quite a few injured. Most of these attacks are unnecessary and not helping us in anyway. The US better not get too involved and get in the middle of this constant war between Israel and Palestine.

  3. I believe thet this war between Israel and Palestine is a waste of time. They said "The meetings are part of the U.S. effort to restore calm." They want to bring in the U.S for help , but that will be very dangerous. I still think its good that the U>S is trying to help but they should stay out of the middle of a war.

  4. I support the Israeli's choice of asking the U.S for help in this situation. This is because with the current tension rising and boiling over more than three consecutive times killing " Forty-one Palestinians and seven Israelis" through street violence with no end in sight meaning that obviously a powerful ally like the U.S to "restore calm.".

  5. The U.S's choice of helping Israel is a good one because they are our allies and deserve to be helped. "Israeli police say at least 10 people are wounded and another two are dead, after an attacker opened fire at a bus station in the southern city of Beersheba Sunday" (NPR). This cannot happen in any country. Hopefully, the U.S can

  6. While I personally believe that the middle east needs to solve its own problems and stop the violence within its own borders, I also believe that the Israelis do in fact need help. Everyday Jews are being targeted. Every year another problem surfaces around Jewish-Muslim tensions, and because they seem helpless to help themselves, the U.S. intervening is a good thing. The problem with this is that you cant solve this problem diplomatically. Its a religious shadow war, and you cant target a religion with an army. There isn't a peaceful way to solve this, because no matter what happens, they still hate each other. This is a mental conflict. Is getting involved in the middle-east usually a good thing? No. Is trying to prevent violence between two religious groups a good thing? Maybe. Is it the U.S's place to do so? I guess, seeing that no one else will... -Per 2

  7. I think it is a good idea that the US is getting involved with this conflict. This could end up with more alliances than enemies and that is always good to have. Anyways it is time to stop the fighting because if civilians are being caught in the conflict, then that is no good. For example, "Israeli police say at least 10 people are wounded and another two are dead, after an attacker opened fire at a bus station" (Deadly Attack At Israeli Bus Station). This is a good point to step in and find a compromise because unarmed people are dying.

  8. The US should help Israel because if we needed Israels help I believe that they would do what they could to help. They are our allies and the point of being an ally is to support the countries you are allied with if they need help. ¨A bystander, an Eritrean man, was also mistakenly shot and injured by security forces¨ shows how out of control Israel is and normal people are getting hurt and killed by weapons they don't want anything to do with. The United States should do what we can to help them as a country.-Rhys Kennedy Per. 6

  9. In my opinion I think the United States should help Israel because if we were in their shoes, they would help us. If you are allies with somebody, you're supposed to help them or defend them and we are allies with Israel. I believe we should do what we can to help Israel because like I mentioned before, if we were in their shoes, they would help us. Kaitlyn Guevarra Per 1

  10. Israel's problems have been going on for many years now. Occasionally tension subsides but they are currently having major problems again. "Israeli police say at least 10 people are wounded and another two are dead, after an attacker opened fire at a bus station in the southern city of Beersheba Sunday" (NPR). I believe that the US getting involved is for the best. They have been struggling to protect themselves so since we are able to, we should aide them. People should feel safe and protected but as of now unarmed civilians are being killed.

  12. I feel like the United States is always in other countries businesses. The U.S. is doing a great job at helping but it isn't good if they would get involved in this. They should have some protection from the U.S. but not too much involvement. We should just make sure that not many other people get hurt over there in Israel.

  13. Israel is in a tremendous amount of danger right now. They are surrounded by their enemies that want to wipe Israel off the map. Now they have people inside their country killing innocent Israelis, so far "forty-one Palestinians and seven Israelis have died in recent street violence"(Reuters). This is unacceptable. We the U.S should provide support to Israel because they need help, they would do the same for us.

  14. Israel and Palestine have had a war going on for many years. But right is very severe compared to before. 10 people have been wounded at a bus station is Israel. It is a god thing that U.S. is helping, but they need to be careful not to get themselves stuck in a war with Palestine.

  15. Israel and Palestine have been at a constant feud for decades now, and over the past couple of years, the tension between the two has grown even tighter. There are more accounts similar to this, taking place frequently, and resulting in many casualties. Brutality is getting out of hand, and their are too many civilian deaths. Not too long ago, "Forty-one Palestinians and seven Israelis...died in recent street violence." And this last Sunday, "at least 10 people [were] wounded and another two...dead", after a mass shooting at an Israeli bus station. As for the U.S.; I believe that we should continue to support the Israelis, because they are our allies and are relying on our help. However, I also think that we should not get too involved. The United States doesn't need to jump into other world conflicts; we should support the feuding countries without creating feuds of our own. -period 2

  16. It is clear that Israel and Palestine are enemies and do not get along under any circumstances. I think that the U.S. should take Israel's side and support them, because they would do the same for us. This passage states, "A bystander, an Eritrean man, was also mistakenly shot and injured by security forces" (NPR). When it comes to innocent people dying, that is when we know everything is getting out of hand. We can help Israel to a certain extent, but not to the point where we start another war.

  17. I don't think that the U.S. should get involved in this issue because we are already involved in so many foreign affairs we cannot afford to get caught up into one more either. We need to figure out our problems at home before helping other countries out. The Israeli Palastininan issue is one that has been going on for decades and the United States cannot just magically solve it, it is only getting more and more violent and I don't think it is worth the U.S. getting involved.

  18. I agree with the Israeli's asking the U.S.for help they deserve our help and the Palestinians have no right asking that man to lift his shirt what so ever

  19. To me I think it would be a good choice if the U.S chose to help Israel because no matter what they are our allies and deserve to be helped. "Israeli police say at least 10 people are wounded and another two are dead, after an attacker opened fire at a bus station in the southern city of Beersheba Sunday" (NPR). This is not suppose to happen in any country. The U.S should provide support to Israel because they would do the same for us.

  21. Ya build a wall. I like the way these people think. If america was smart we would do something about immigrants coming into our country and killing our citizens. But instead we allow sanctuary cities to keep murdering scum from being deported. But really i support this wall. If Israel wants to protect its people with a wall then we as good americans should support them. Israel is one our biggest allies to date and we should work on strengthening our relationship with them. So heck ya build a wall do what you think is going to protect your citizens best Israel, and then maybe America will follow in suit.

  22. According to the article, "Israeli police say at least 10 people are wounded and another two are dead, after an attacker opened fire at a bus station in the southern city of Beersheba Sunday. An Israeli soldier and the gunman, an Arab attacker, according to the AP, were killed." Has any one wondered how all of this started? There has been some peace between the Israelis and Palestinians until a Zionist decides to burn down a house in Nablus, with a family of 4, The parents and two children. The parents and one child died, one child survived, he was 90% burned, and this is when the conflict started all over again. The conflict between Israel and Palestine has been going on for over 60 years. The Jews have suffered racism and desemitism down the ages in many European country's. The one place in the entire world that Jews were neither discriminated nor subjected to pogrom was Palestine. The Palestine that was wiped off the map when Britain granted the Jews someone else's country that had Jews living side by side with Christians and Muslims for century's without a single trace of discrimination or violence. antisemitism in Europe which massacred 6 million Jews was paid for not by the country's in Europe, but was paid by the people who were completely innocent of that Holocaust (Palestinians),who had never prosecuted the Jews. Britain stepped in, in 1917 with the Balfour deceleration made by the British minister , Balfour, to a group of Zionists Jews, the men who Israel was promised were ethistic Jews, they represented a tiny proportion of the worlds Jews. Balfour promised the Zionists the land that belonged to the third people, without consulting either the British or the Jews and least of all, consulting the Palestinians. In conclusion, I am against funding Israel(A country that has free education and free health care for all of their citizens) of our tax money to kill innocent children and women in Palestine that have no high tech weapons like Israelis do, all they have is rocks and knives to defend themselves, I also don't think it is a good idea for the U.S. to help out the Israelis, We shouldn't use the money to help on war, we should use it for our needs in our country for schools, shelters, the poor, elderly, and pay off our debts.

  23. I think the war between the Israelis and Palestinians is very sad. "A few days ago, Palestinians set fire to the tomb, which has also happened during tense times in the past."(NPR) i find it disturbing that the Palestinians would abuse and mistreat such an important figure in Israeli religion is rude and childish. I hope that they can finally settle the fights and mistreatment between the two cultures, and i hope that if the US chooses to get involved in the situation they will be careful because this dispute is very dangerous and on high tensions.

  24. The United States stepping in and supporting Israel is probably for the better. We are a very powerful country and could possibly restore claim. We could also use an ally going into a fight or argument in our near future. What I strongly disagree with is the Palestinians trespassing their boundaries and corrupting the Israelis for no reason. "This comes a day after Israeli officials say five stabbing or attempted stabbings of Israelis by Palestinians assailants took place in Jerusalem and in the West Bank on Saturday." (NPR) This is not acceptable. If building a concrete barrier is what Israel believes will stop such violent behavior from Palestinians, then I say go for it. We as allies, should also support this because if we were in their shoes we would want the same.

  25. I don't think that building a wall will help Israel because the wall could break and people could jump over the wall. It seemes silly. I think that Israel should come up with another idea like having the U.S help them fight against the Palestinians.
