The following is a speech that President Barack Obama gave on Oct. 1, in response to a shooting that killed 10 people at a community college in Oregon.
There's been another mass shooting in America — this time, at a community college in Oregon.
That means there are more American families — moms, dads, children — whose lives have been changed forever. That means there is another community stunned with grief, and communities across the country forced to relive their own pain, and parents across the country who are scared because they know it might have been their families or their children.
I’ve been to Roseburg, Oregon, where the shooting took place. There are really good people there. I want to thank all the first responders whose bravery likely saved some lives today.
A Blanket Of Comfort For The Grieving
In the coming days, we’ll learn about the victims — young men and women who were studying and learning and working hard, their eyes set on the future, their dreams on what they could make of their lives. And America will cover everyone who is grieving with our prayers and our love.
But as I said just a few months ago, and I said a few months before that, and I said each time we see one of these mass shootings, our thoughts and prayers are not enough. It’s not enough. It does not capture the heartache and grief and anger that we should feel. And it does nothing to stop this violence from happening someplace else in America — next week, or a couple of months from now.
We don't yet know why this individual did what he did. And it's fair to say that anybody who does this has a sickness in their minds, no matter what they think their motivations may be. But we are not the only country on Earth that has people with mental illnesses or who want to do harm to other people. We are the only advanced country on Earth that sees these kinds of mass shootings every few months.
Gun Laws Must Change To Prevent More Tragedy
Earlier this year, I answered a question in an interview by saying, “The United States of America is the one advanced nation on Earth in which we do not have sufficient common-sense gun-safety laws — even in the face of repeated mass killings.” And later that day, there was a mass shooting at a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana. That day! Somehow this has become routine. The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine, as does the conversation in the aftermath of it. We've become numb to this.
We talked about this after shootings such as the ones in Columbine, Colorado, and in Blacksburg, Virginia. We talked about it after the shootings in Tucson, Arizona; in Newtown, Connecticut; in Aurora, Colorado, and in Charleston, South Carolina. It cannot be this easy for somebody who wants to inflict harm on other people to get his or her hands on a gun.
And what’s become routine, of course, is the response of those who oppose any kind of common-sense gun legislation. Right now, I can imagine the press releases being cranked out: We need more guns, they’ll argue. We need fewer gun-safety laws.
Does anybody really believe that? There are scores of responsible gun owners in this country and they know that it's not true. We know because of the polling that says the majority of Americans understand we should be changing these laws — including the majority of responsible, law-abiding gun owners.
More Guns Do Not Equal More Safety
There is a gun for roughly every man, woman and child in America. So how can you, with a straight face, make the argument that more guns will make us safer? We know that states with the most gun laws tend to have the fewest gun deaths. So the idea that gun laws don't work, or just will make it harder for law-abiding citizens and criminals will still get their guns, is not borne out by the evidence.
We know that other countries, in response to one mass shooting, have been able to create laws that almost eliminate mass shootings. These countries include friends of our government such as Great Britain and Australia. These are countries like ours.
And, of course, what’s also routine is that somebody, somewhere will comment and say, Obama made this issue political. Well, this is something we should make political. It is relevant to our common life together. I would ask news organizations — because I won't put these facts forward — have news organizations tally up the number of Americans who’ve been killed through terrorist attacks over the last decade and the number of Americans who’ve been killed by gun violence, and post those side-by-side on your news reports. This won't be information coming from me; it will be coming from you. We spend over a trillion dollars, and pass countless laws, and devote entire agencies to preventing terrorist attacks on our soil. And we should do this. But we still have a Congress that explicitly blocks us from even collecting more data, or information, on how we could potentially reduce gun deaths. How can that be?
We Must Stand And Face The Victims Of Our Inaction
This is a political choice that we make to allow this to happen every few months in America. We collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones because of our inaction. When Americans are killed in mine disasters, we work to make mines safer. When Americans are killed in floods and hurricanes, we make communities safer. When roads are unsafe, we fix them to reduce car deaths. We have seatbelt laws because we know it saves lives. So the notion that gun violence is somehow different -- that our freedom and our Constitution forbids any modest regulation of how we use a deadly weapon, when there are law-abiding gun owners all across the country who could hunt and protect their families and do everything they do under such regulations -- doesn’t make sense.
So, tonight, as those of us who are lucky enough to hug our kids a little closer are thinking about the families who aren't so fortunate, I’d ask the American people to think about how they can get our government to change these laws, and to save lives, and to let young people grow up. If you think this is a problem, then you should expect your elected officials to reflect your views.
And I would particularly ask America’s gun owners to think about whether your views are properly being represented by the organization that suggests it's speaking for you.
How Many Must Die Before We Embrace A Change?
And each time this happens I'm going to bring this up. Each time this happens I am going to say that we can actually do something about it, but we're going to have to change our laws. This is not something I can do by myself. I've got to have a Congress and I've got to have state lawmakers and governors who are willing to work with me on this.
I hope and pray that I don't have to come out again during my remaining time as president to offer my condolences to families for something like this. But based on my experience as president, I can't guarantee that. And that's terrible to say, and it can change.
May God bless the memories of those who were killed today. May He bring comfort to their families, and courage to the injured as they fight their way back. And may He give us the strength to come together and find the courage to change.
I believe that when guns get into the hands of the wrong people, bad things will happen for instance school shootings, and the person has to be distraught with themselves or others, and don't know what to do with the anger and take it out on others that make a big scene such as mass-shootings that will hurt many families and friends around them. These are children, or young adults with a bright future ahead of them, and the people who are doing this are taking it all away from them.
ReplyDeleteMass shootings seem like they happen each week in America. When guns end up with the wrong person, something bad is bound to happen. President Barack Obama said "We don't yet know why this individual did what he did. And it's fair to say that anybody who does this has a sickness in their minds, no matter what they think their motivations may be. But we are not the only country on Earth that has people with mental illnesses or who want to do harm to other people." When there is a mass shooting, whether it is a good neighborhood or a bad neighborhood, there is a lot of devastation in between the families. It is very unfortunate to have someone in your neighborhood go to school one day and never come home. These sick-in-the-head people come into a movie theater or on a school campus with the intention of killing people, but the real question is why do they think this is okay?

Guns can be very dangerous, yet they can also be used for safety. If the government takes away gun rights for American citizens then they are stull taking away someone's rights. This means it would be just as easy for them to take away freedom of speech or press. If someone was indending to kill someone they could have just as easily eith a knife or a bomb. It's the person behind the gun that pulls the triggor. America cannot be fully safe because there are people who kill, but the government shouldn't punish America as a whole. Taking away basic human rights is wrong, because the government should be protecting the citizens rights not taking them away.

Practically every day in America there is some tragedy that goes on and we have two options with that forget about it, or make a change to help prevent it. We are always talking about how America needs to change for whatever reason, but the problem here is no one does anything about it. That is why I believe after this shooting happened they should incorporate a new law. That’s why when President Obama said, “Each time this happens I am going to say that we can actually do something about it, but we're going to have to change our laws” (Newsela) I think it’s time to make a new law about gun safety, and actually do it. Everyday a family ends up going home with one less family member, which is so sad. One way to stop it is to have more gun safety around America.

Guns are a weapon. It's a fact, there dangerous and one wrong bad move and someone can end up dead. But if we make the law so guns are illegal it will just make it even worse because people will get their hands on them, it will make people want them and if someone want's something they will get it. It is like with illegal drugs, people still get them and use them so it will not make it any better, it will make everything worse and more dangerous.

Paragraph 12 states "There is a gun for roughly every man, woman and child in America." Its pretty scary to know that there are that many guns in America but by taking away guns that will decrease the number of deaths but that would also have responsible Americans to have doubt in our system if they were deprived of there rights. Guns have started to become a big issue but even if they are made illegal bad people will still get them if they really want to. More security should be put in place to make America safer.

ReplyDeleteGuns are not the major problem. It's the people who own them. Limiting guns alone will not solve the shooting problem in our country. What we really need to focus on is fixing the mental health state of the individuals who choose to use firearms to take action. Almost every person who commits mass murder has a family or mental health issue. The problem isn't the availability of guns. If an extremely happy person has a gun sitting next to them, they aren't going to go use it for bad reasons. In our society, it has become hard for people to talk about their problems and feelings without being ridiculed. We should worry about fixing the people, not the guns. We made drugs illegal too, and that didn't work out well.
I have to agree with John in this case. I think that the guns are not really the problem, it is the people who are handeling them. Most people who commit these types of murders have mental health issues and are really mind right. Taking away guns from the people who are actaully responsible isn't really fair to them. I think the government should try to solve the problem of the people acquiring the guns, not just taking them away completely
Deletei feel that the guns are not the problem, it is the people using them. And i can see why they would want to put restrictions on guns, but i feel like we need to focus in more on the people who use them. But guns can also be used as a safety defense. If the government chooses to out these certain restrictions on guns, then there may be a downside to this. If they don't put restrictions on, then certain people who use guns for the wrong reason, will be able to do whatever they want. And if they do put restrictions on them, then the people who use them for safety instead of harm will also be at a loss.

ReplyDeletePeople believe that it is the gun that is dangerous, but its the person behind the gun. Changing and making stricter gun laws are an option, but it is definitely not the smartest option. Most people use guns for protection or to hunt, for food, but it is not the guns decision to go out and shoot human beings. If the government decided to change the gun laws, these people who kill can and will find other ways to work around that law to still kill. An example of this is killing by gases, poisons, or knives. People should be able to have guns as a safety tool, as long as they have and use it for the right reasons. If anything, its the people that are using them wrong that should have strict restrictions.
ReplyDeleteI agree that people are the problem, not the guns. I understand why gun laws should be enforced and changed more, since there have been so many shootings in the past few years. There should be more restrictions on having and buying guns in order for people to be safer. "There is a gun for roughly every man, woman and child in America" (12). That's over seven billion guns in the world, if not more. Heavier restrictions should be added to hopefully make America safer and reduce mass shootings.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that changing the gun laws is a good idea, but it isn't the gun that's the issue. The issue is the person who is handling the gun. Guns aren't dangerous unless they are being used for the wrong reasons. If and when the government decided to go through with these changes regarding guns, there is going to be a downfall as well.

I agree with Aubrey. Shootings are horrid. "That means there are more American families — moms, dads, children — whose lives have been changed forever. That means there is another community stunned with grief, and communities across the country forced to relive their own pain, and parents across the country who are scared because they know it might have been their families or their children.". However, guns are not the issue like Aubrey said, the people handling the guns are the issue. Guns should only be handed out to people are are trained and who knows the danger of guns. However, even that won't stop shootings completely, there is always a danger in these high tech machines, but it's worth a shot to change who is allowed to carry them.
DeleteThis article reminded me of one of the old articles, which talked about if guns were dangerous or the people holding the gun, and reading this article I still believe that whoever holds the gun and uses it for the wrong reasons are more dangerous. I also agree with them, for wanting to be more strict with gun laws. One of the quotes that caught my attention, "The United States of America is the one advanced nation on Earth in which we do not have sufficient common-sense gun-safety laws — even in the face of repeated mass killings."( President Appeals For Change In Gun Laws After Oregon Shooting (Newsela) ) just reading this kind of gives me the shivers. I keep forgetting how advance the United States is from time to time, and when I'm reminded how advance this country is, it has to come back with guns. This quote also followed up with this other quote that caught my eye "And later that day, there was a mass shooting at a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana. That day! Somehow this has become routine."( President Appeals For Change In Gun Laws After Oregon Shooting (Newsela) ). The fact that the author said "Somehow this has become routine" really horrifies me. Gun shooting should never be a "routine", and finally another quote that really fascinates me is "We know that other countries, in response to one mass shooting, have been able to create laws that almost eliminate mass shootings. These countries include friends of our government such as Great Britain and Australia. These are countries like ours." ( President Appeals For Change In Gun Laws After Oregon Shooting (Newsela) ) this quote, reminded me of that old article I talked about in the beginning. In that article it mention how President Obama was talking about the gun laws in Australia, how they haven't have a mass shooting in quite a long time and how we should follow their ways. I think they should consider the thought since there are a lot of unnecessary shooting.

This is a very controversial topic in our nation today, and the way which it is dealt with can have serious positive or negative consequences on our country. I think Obama's speech is very objective at how it targets the situation while being thought-provoking about the future of guns laws in our country. One statement that stood out to me was when Obama said, "We are the only advanced country on Earth that sees these kinds of mass shootings every few months" (Newsela). It is clear that the solution to a problem of this magnitude requires strict gun laws. Lastly, I saw the graph Obama asked to be compiled on CNN, the results were as follows: 3,380 terrorist deaths and 406,496 gun deaths. With this in mind, I must firmly, but respectfully disagree with all who are against increasing gun laws.
ReplyDeleteJonPaul Lambert Period 1
Limiting guns will not fully solve the problem. Guns aren't the main issue, it's the people who own the guns. What will solve the problem is not allowing guns to be sold to people who are not mentally stable. If someone purchases a gun and they are mentally stable, they are more unlikely to use them in a dangerous way. But if someone who is mentally unstable purchases a firearm, they will more likely use it in a dangerous way, and most of the time not on purpose. Overall, guns are not the problem, it's the people using them.
ReplyDeleteGun laws are a sensitive subject in the United States. While the country has many people behind the gun laws for safety reasons, it is arguable that it has become too easy to accumulate guns. Mental instability should be something closely watched as to prevent tragic events like this. The president says "it cannot be this easy for somebody who wants to inflict harm on other people to get his or her hands on a gun" (Obama). It is extremely accurate, in many cases it is too simple to acquire a firearm. Firearms should be treated with care, and the laws shouldn't be handled lightly. If gun laws are changed, limitations should be more geared towards the safe firearm users getting them rather than people who handle them unsafely.

Guns are not the issue, people are. Guns do not kill people, people kill people. I think if we were to increase gun laws it is only putting us at risk. Gun's are a useful tool, if used properly. There is a huge difference in someone buying a gun to protect their family and someone who is buying a gun to shoot up a school. Again, limiting the guns will not solve the problem, because the gun isn't shooting the person- the person is shooting the person. Guns are a huge advantage. They may be dangerous, but when used correctly and for the right reasons are a useful tool to Americans. We have the right to keep and bear arms, the government would be taking that away part of that right if there was a more increased gun law.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Obama's thoughts that the gun laws have to change. Some people claim that the definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing over and over, and expecting different results. Why are we not doing anything about these gun laws, when we want these mass shootings to go away? We all need to step in and try to come up with a solution to this problem. Even though not everyone may agree on what is the problem, the guns or the people, any new law that would help to regulate guns use, would be a step in the right direction. We know that gun regulations work because, "states with the most gun laws tend to have the fewest gun deaths"(Obama). We all need to join together to come up with a solution to this problem, even a temporary solution, just to get the country going in the right direction.
ReplyDeleteRenee Gibson, period 2
I agree that there should be some restrictions on guns but there can't be too many. If there are to many it makes no sense. The people who own the guns are the problem. It's even a bigger problem if the parents of the kid with a mental illness tell them the gun safe code (assuming they have a gun safe) and at that point it's the parents problem. Guns don't kill people, people kill other people WITH guns.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do agree with Obama that gun laws have to change, I think that the laws shouldn't be to strict. It is crazy to do nothing about the gun violence that people in this country experience every day. We as a country can't do nothing and just watch as hundreds of people are harmed from gun violence. Something has to change. Truman Andrus period 6
ReplyDeleteI think that gun control and gun laws are kind of on the sensitive side due to mass killings rising in the United States. The government as well as us cannot find out a solution, however I think that if you give guns to the wrong people bad things will happen. If you control guns you are only controlling the legal sale of weapons and not the illegal and criminal sale of those weapons. If you ban guns only criminals have them and the regular people do not. "And each time this happens I'm going to bring this up. Each time this happens I am going to say that we can actually do something about it, but we're going to have to change our laws". I do not think we need to change the laws but just better enforce them.
ReplyDeleteGun control is very controversial topic in the US right now. Weapons are made dangerous by people, but as it has been evident, we cannot seem to control the people. At this point, our country as a whole needs to take action regarding gun control. We know that states with the most gun laws tend to have the fewest gun deaths" (President appeals for change in gun laws). Guns can be good for personal protection, but the ease and type of guns that are acquirable is one of the main reasons guns are a problem. No automatic or semi auto rifles should be sold to the public without extensive licenses and testing by doctors. Normal pistols should require more simpler gun licenses. An individual can protect themself with a pistol, but can not cause huge harm as rifles tend to do. We need to implement laws to restrict the type of guns sold to the public and the testing done to acquire guns.
ReplyDeleteAmar Dhillon period 2
I think that this gun issue will always be present. People just have very different opinions on it. I don't think we should have to ban guns I think we need to regulate them and who as them. "And each time this happens I'm going to bring this up. Each time this happens I am going to say that we can actually do something about it, but we're going to have to change our laws" I think we should definitely change the laws, but not the gun restricting laws. We need to change the enforcement of gun regulation laws.
ReplyDeleteI understand that people feel the need to make gun laws, however, the problem is not the guns, but the people using them. Guns can be very useful when used for the right reason by the right people. Before we put laws in action for gun use, we should monitor the people using them. The main issue is the people using the guns, not the gun itself.
ReplyDeleteIt is truly terable what happened there. It astounds me how someone could do such a thing. However, the fact that the president gave a speech about it is cool, even if it was because of the bad things. When he said "I’ve been to Roseburg, Oregon, where the shooting took place" (Barack Obama) I wonder if he went before or after the shooting. Did he only go because the shooting took place or would he have go ne there anyways? If he only went there after the why, why go at all other than to say that he had? These things make me wonder what his motives for going are.
ReplyDeleteGuns don't kill people. The people that the government somehow allows to buy them kill people. Guns aren't a killing device when they are in the hands of people that don't have mental health issues. If the president makes guns illegal there people are only going to want to rebel and then more guns are going to be bought. -Cody rowen 1st period.
ReplyDeleteGuns are not the problem or the thing that needs restrictions. Its the people who use them that need laws against or restrictions on. If there is ever a shooting or anything, the gun is blamed, never the person who is the problem. The gun can't shoot on it's own, so look at the person next time. James Tomaino-period 6
ReplyDeleteIt really does not matter whether guns are illegal or not. People will get their hands on guns if they are illegal or not. However, guns are not the problem. People are the problem. Guns are not dangerous if dangerous people are not in the picture. I think that it would be dumb to makes guns illegal for a few reasons. One because guns aren't the problem. Two, because people will still use them either way. And three, it would just make people mad.
ReplyDeleteKyle Brown p.5
I believe that guns are not the problem. But that people are. The gun become dangerous when put in the hands of dangerous people. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. And guns are a defense in some cases, so taking them away is not they proper way to handle this, I believe. And if they take the guns away, they people who should not have them will somehow get one and that will still be a problem.
ReplyDeleteThe only problem is, who is holding the gun. We shouldn't restrict guns, we should restrict certain people from obtaining guns. "We spend over a trillion dollars, and pass countless laws, and devote entire agencies to preventing terrorist attacks on our soil." We do so much to try and prevent these things from happening, but they are still happening every few months. To limit the amount of shootings in the US, I think we should not just have gun laws, but we should limit the amount of people who have access to guns.
ReplyDeleteObama doesn't know what he's talking about. To say that guns are the reason that people are getting killed doesn't make sense. If a lunatic ran around with a knife and stabbed just as many people, what would people say? We need to ban knifes because they kill people? No, the weapon is but a tool that a person uses while conducting such a terrible thing. The people who are doing this have very serious mental problems and should not be around any weapons period. Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
ReplyDeleteI believe that guns are no lf the problem. It is not the guns that go out and hurt people it the person that is handling the gun which is probably a person that needs help. People need guns to defend them and to hunt for food. " so the idea that gun laws don't work, or will just make it hard for law-abiding citizens and criminals to get there guns". If guns were band it would not save us. In a criminal will break the law and get illegal drugs and do drug. Then they will somehow have a way to get a gun and use it. Also people with guns that have the right to have them won't beable to defend themselves -Amanda Grigsby
ReplyDeleteComing from a huge gun supporter i don't believe that more gun laws are the answer to americas problems. First id like to state that guns kill less people than knives each year, and knives less than fists. Also to add on to that last statement i would like to point out that most crimes committed with guns aren't committed with legal guns. So how would regulations on the purchase and owning of legal guns stop the purchase and use of ilegal firearms? Well it won't. I can understand more extensive backround checks for legal gun assumption but otherwise making it harder to get guns for people wont stop criminals. just people like you and me. The people who don't want to hurt others. I support guns not outlawing them, i love hunting and target shooting. Both perfectly safe because the people with guns legally aren't the dangerous ones it's the people who got their guns illegally that are.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with Obama's speech and its sad how many people take advantage of the law of owning a gun. It is not fair to everyone who has to be around people who make the poor choice and the families and friends who have to hear about it and deal with the pain and sadness. I believe the law in owning a gun should stay, but its the people with the wrong thoughts in their head that we need to keep the guns away from. Guns don't do the harm its the people that hold the gun.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the reason these things are happening through violent video games. My dad went through a class about this and it is proven to affect your mind. When they get this fantasy in this game, they want to act this out and start to kill people. Like in the school shootings, they all had one thing in common, they all played violent video games.
