Week #7 (10/5-10/9)- Jerry Brown Signs Doctor-Assisted Death Bill (Sac Bee)

  1. I think that if someone does want to end their own life they should be able to. First off, I think they should not be able to end their own in some circumstances but if they are dying from cancer or anything that is a long, slow, and painful death they should be able to. I think that it is okay in a situation where someone is already in "excruciating pain" and would like to die in comfort rather than in pain(Jerry Brown). Now I do believe it is a very good idea that if someone were to end their own life with lethal drugs, they would have to have more than one doctor's approval so that they would know it was not just a made up disease or just suicide.

  3. I definitely think that someone who is suffering should be able to make the decision to die or not. Many people were waiting for this law to be passed. The ones who disagree with this new law may not disagree anymore if they were put into someone else' shoes who is suffering. The one who is suffering should be able to make their own decision to die or not, because it is their body. For many years, suffering people couldn't take a death pill, and I feel as if it was a form of torture. I am relieved to her that this new law has been signed.

  4. i think that people should make there own decision if they want to die or not. if someone is in a crytial amount of pain and wants to not live anymore he should have the right to do so. If people are living on life support and are going to be in a bed for the rest of there life and they want to die then they should be able to.

  5. In this article, I'm fixed between supporting the new bill, but also opposing it. I liked what Brown said when he stated: "'In the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death,' Brown wrote in a signing message. 'I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldn't deny that right to others'" (Siders and Koseff). I can understand is one who is really struggling with whatever they are going through and how they want to stop living; however, when I think deeper about it, there are so many things to keep living for until one's very last second of life. If this situation was in my own hands, I wouldn't pull the plug because I would never be ready to do that. Despite how much misery I would be in, there are so many things that make up for it.

  6. I strongly believe that if someone is suffering from years of pain or years of a disease, that they can decide whether or not they want to end that. Brown stated, "In the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death,' Brown wrote in a signing message. 'I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldn't deny that right to others" (Siders and Koseff). This provides evidence that he has put into consideration the thoughts of those that are "trapped" at hospitals for months at a time. Everyone has a right to their own body, mind and life. If someone (in the right state of mind) is done with the suffering and torture they have had to face, they should be aloud to decide if they would rather go or not.

  7. I believe that if someone is suffering from illness and they want to end their life, they should be able to make that decision. On the other hand, life is a natural thing, and so is death. Death should come naturally and not by choice. However, under the circumstance that someone is in immense pain for a long time would change my mind. Only that person knows what is best for them and what they feel the most comfortable with. In most of our lives we have taken a pet to the vet and had to put it down because we knew that they would be better off without suffering for longer. The situations are relative. Even though I had a hard time deciding if I agree or not, I ultimately think that if someone is in horrible pain, enough to make them want to end their life, they should have the right to make that choice for themselves.

  8. If someone wants to end their life, they should have the right too. People who are sick and in pain aren’t truly living, especially those with only a little time left to live. They should have the option to end their life so they can die peacefully. Brown wrote "I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldn’t deny that right to others” Siders and Koseff). If I was in a situation where I was very sick with no chance of healing, I would want to have options. It isn’t a sin to want to relieve yourself of pain.

  9. I strongly believe that this law should be passed for many reasons. If someone has been suffering from years of pain and has made the choice to end their life, they should have the right to in a way that is painless and quick. There would need to be many laws around this bill that protect the sick person to make sure that is the right decision. In the article titled "Jerry Brown Signs Doctor-Assisted Death Bill," Jerry Brown states, "I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldn’t deny that right to others" (Brown pg 4). I agree with Jerry Brown because so many people suffer for so many years and wish to end their own life in a painless way, but can't. With certain laws to back it up, I believe this bill should be passed.

  10. This law should get passed. When someone has been in pain for several years and wants to end their life, then that's their decision. People need to have their own right to decide if it's time to end their life or not. When someone wants to end their life, their decision is not hurting anyone else. A person's life knows what's best for them.

  11. I really believe that this law should pass. If someone is older or in pain then they decide if they want to go. Other people do not get to decide that. It should be their own decision. A person should know what's best for them.

  12. I think that this law should be passed. If someone is suffering and in pain from an illness, then they should be able to end their life painlessly. Brown says, “In the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death." (Siders and Koseff). I think that they would need to set up laws so this is not abused and they are sure that it is the right decision for them.

  13. I believe this law opens doors for people with terminal illnesses. Citizens can now choose to continue living in their state, or end their life. If I was in that position, I would appreciate the choice. This law, as we all know, will not satisfy everyone. There will always be people with different opinions. However, this will satisfy the people who are struggling with an illness.

  14. I believe this law should be passed because if people are in pain or don't have anything to live for any longer they should be able to make the decision by them self instead of having a family member approve of it.

Doctor assisted suicide is unethical. It is true that some people have life threatening illnesses. But, they are not in the state of mind to decide whether or not they continue to try and live. Brown stated, "I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill". This may be a comfort to some, but this puts the power to kill in the hands of doctors, who should not be making that decision. I strongly believe Brown should not pass this bill.

  16. I believe that if someone is suffering through a disease or sickness they have the right to end their life. Brown stated, "In the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death." Although this is a very contraversal topic, I believe that everyone knows what is best for themselves and they should have the right to make a choice like this.

  17. If someone is suffering with unbearable pain, then they should be allowed to end their life. People shouldn't choose whether or not someone can make the choice to end their suffering. Jerrry Brown said, " I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain" (Sac Bee). Someone going through such horrible pain should not be forced to live longer then they want to. I believe Brown should pass this bill for the ill.

  18. I think that if people are suffering from a life threatening illness they should be able to do what they want with their last days. As well as it is much safer to die in a hospital setting with a lethal injection rather than going home and attempting suidcide. Also these people can die in a setting that is surrounded by loved ones that can make the process go as smooth as possible. Overall that is a much better way to pass away. If the people are so unhappy with their health and their illness they should be granted their wish and be able to die in a safe hospital setting. - Sabrina Shaw

  19. I believe that this law should be passed. If someone was suffering because of the pain that they are dealing with, they should be able to make the decision of wanting to live or dying. This should be allowed because it's their life, and they should be able to make the choice between continuing to suffer or pass away peacefully.

  20. I am a firm believer that this law should be passed, and that people with terminal illnesses have a right to end their life peacefully and painlessly. Nobody has the right to tell a person when they can or cannot die and how they can do so, especially considering that we do not know the physical and mental detrement this illness may have on the patient. Some people say that this is not a good idea because misdiagnosis occurs all the time, but the prescription must be approved by at least 2 doctors and even with the prescription the person has a choice as to whether or not they will take the pill. Overall, I think that this should become legal as it is putting patients out of their pain and allowing them to take control over their own fate

  21. I honestly believe that the law should be passed. If you are in a serious amount of pain you should be able to end their life. It's the patients choice if they want to go or stay in this world for a little bit longer. If they know they are not going to make it anyway and they are suffering they should be able to make the life decision for them self and not have anyone telling them what though should do.

  22. People should have to right to choose whether their life ends or not. If people are terminally ill, it is better to have it end quickly and painlessly than to have it be dragged out and be painful for everyone. Even in the article, it said, "he was left to reflect on his own." Govenor Brown was left to decide on this bill and found it better when he thought about his own mortality. He would want to end it painlessly as well. He made a good decision to publish this.

  23. I approve and agree with this law. If someone has be suffering through an illness and know sooner or later they will pass, why not end the pain sooner? It is a big deal for the person and everyone who knows them but sometimes you have to think whats best for them. If it will make the person in less pain and out of misery, I think its a good plan. It states in the 9th paragraph "The legislation, modeled on a law enacted in Oregon in 1997, limits assisted death to patients predicted to die within six months, and it requires approval from multiple physicians". I think before the physicians make the decision the patient and family/friends should come first. It would be best if the patient was in the right mind to allow them to make the decision, but if they aren't then close family or very close friends should make the decision for them.

  24. I believe that this bill is a good decision because it can actually help people who have had a history of suicidal thoughts or actions. I don't think people who all of he sudden feel suicidal should be able to go through with this bill. They should at least be able to get help before ending their life. Obviously ending your life isn't a good thing so there has to be a lot behind this bill before actually being aloud to end your life.

  25. This should be passed. If a person is only a few months away from dying a painful death, they should have the right to end it quick and painlessly. It seems cruel to force a person that is about to die to keep living for such a short amount of time. In that short amount of time, that person physically deteriorates and does not die easy. Why watch them suffer when you can let them die with minimal pain.

  26. Jerry Brown states: "I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldn’t deny that right to others." I support the passing of this bill. After studying this topic and gathering knowledge through many sources I have come to realize the complete and utter effects that terminal illnesses have on patients. No human should have to suffer from a vigorous and painful death when they can have the option of a more swift and painless one. This topic is very complex but before obtaining the medication one must go through two doctors to prove that they are in need of the medication. In addition, the patient must prove that they are mentally stable as well as able to speak and defend themselves in the final decision. There are many tasks to complete to obtain this procedure/ medication so it is not just an unjustified process. I believe the bill should be passed to give someone the right to their own death. Gabi LaBeaux p.6

  27. I believe that this law should be passed because people she genuinely don't wish to be alive any longer should have the right to end their life rather than suffering for the rest of their life. Terminal illnesses are utterly torturous and if the person suffering wishes to no longer be in that pain, they should have the right to end their life.

  28. i believe this law is a good one. If someone knows they are dying and can never get better, I believe they should have the right to end their own life. Nobody wants to continue living, knowing they are dying and in pain. It was said that Brown might have oppossed the law because he felt that "any deliberate shortening of one’s life is sinful.” Ending your own life is not sinful if you have the reasons too. If one is dying and its painful, you should be able to end it. I strongly believe this law should be passed.
