Week #4 (9/13-9/18)- Computers 'do not improve' pupil results, says OECD (BBC)

Investing heavily in school computers and classroom technology does not improve pupils' performance, says a global study from the OECD.
The think tank says frequent use of computers in schools is more likely to be associated with lower results.
The OECD's education director Andreas Schleichersays school technology had raised "too many false hopes".
Tom Bennett, the government's expert on pupil behaviour, said teachers had been "dazzled" by school computers.
The report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development examines the impact of school technology on international test results, such as the Pisa tests taken in more than 70 countries and tests measuring digital skills.
It says education systems which have invested heavily in information and communications technology have seen "no noticeable improvement" in Pisa test results for reading, mathematics or science.

Unplugged

"If you look at the best-performing education systems, such as those in East Asia, they've been very cautious about using technology in their classrooms," said Mr Schleicher.
"Those students who use tablets and computers very often tend to do worse than those who use them moderately."
Computer use graph
Annual global spending on educational technology in schools has been valued at £17.5bn, by technology analysts Gartner. In the UK, the spending on technology in schools is £900m.
The British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA) says schools have £619m in budgets for ICT, with £95m spent on software and digital content.
But Mr Schleicher says the "impact on student performance is mixed at best".
  • Students who use computers very frequently at school get worse results
  • Students who use computers moderately at school, such as once or twice a week, have "somewhat better learning outcomes" than students who use computers rarely
  • The results show "no appreciable improvements" in reading, mathematics or science in the countries that had invested heavily in information technology
  • High achieving school systems such as South Korea and Shanghai in China have lower levels of computer use in school
  • Singapore, with only a moderate use of technology in school, is top for digital skills

"One of the most disappointing findings of the report is that the socio-economic divide between students is not narrowed by technology, perhaps even amplified," said Mr Schleicher.
He said making sure all children have a good grasp of reading and maths is a more effective way to close the gap than "access to hi-tech devices"
He warned classroom technology can be a distraction and result in pupils cutting and pasting "prefabricated" homework answers from the internet.
The study shows "there is no single country in which the internet is used frequently at school by a majority of students and where students' performance improved".
Among the seven countries with the highest level of internet use in school, it found three experienced "significant declines" in reading performance - Australia, New Zealand and Sweden - and three more had results that had "stagnated" - Spain, Norway and Denmark.
The countries and cities with the lowest use of the internet in school - South Korea, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Japan - are among the top performers in international tests.
The study did not gather a figure for the UK's internet time in class, but the UK has among the highest levels of computers per pupil.

Computers per students
But Mr Schleicher says the findings of the report should not be used as an "excuse" not to use technology, but as a spur to finding a more effective approach.
He gave the example of digital textbooks which can be updated as an example of how online technology could be better than traditional methods.
Mark Chambers, chief executive of Naace, the body supporting the use of computers in schools, said it was unrealistic to think schools should reduce their use of technology.
"It is endemic in society now, at home young people will be using technology, there's no way that we should take technology out of schools, schools should be leading not following."
Computers in UK schools
  • 1.3m desktop computers
  • 840,000 laptops
  • 730,000 tablets (expected to rise to 939,000 next year)
  • 22% are "ineffective"

Microsoft spokesman Hugh Milward said: "The internet gives any student access to the sum of human knowledge, 3D printing brings advanced manufacturing capabilities to your desktop, and the next FTSE 100 business might just as well be built in a bedroom in Coventry as in the City."
Head teacher John Morris also strongly rejected the idea.
"We're preparing our children for jobs that don't yet exist," said Mr Morris, head of Ardleigh Green junior school in the London Borough of Havering.
"We're training them to use technology which hasn't yet been invented. So how can you possibly divorce technology from industry or from teaching and learning?
"When people say too much money is being spent on technology in school, my response is 'Nonsense'. What we need is more money, more investment."
The government's behaviour expert Tom Bennett said there might have been unrealistic expectations, but the "adoption of technology in the classroom can't be turned back".
England's schools minister Nick Gibb said: "We want all schools to consider the needs of their pupils to determine how technology can complement the foundations of good teaching and a rigorous curriculum, so that every pupil is able to achieve their potential."

I do not agree with the statement saying computers decrease results in the classroom. The article above argues that computers have contributed to a serious decline in student productivity. Mr. Schleicher warns that, "classroom technology can be a distraction and result in pupils cutting and pasting "prefabricated" homework answers from the internet". Yes, students can choose to disregard assignments and waste time surfing the internet. However, any student who will waste class time on a computer, will find other ways to waste their time without a computer. The internet is a valuable and worldwide tool that gives students access to the millions of facts, opinions, and information. Computers also enable the student to formulate presentations that they can share with other students and classes through programs such as Google. All in all, computers are a positive recent addition to the classroom that must be continued to be implemented into the lives of all students.

    1. I agree with Cameron. I don't think that technology is not the reason that students are doing worse. I think students will be students. If they are the type of student who will mess around, then they're most likely going to mess around whether they have Internet access or not. However, the students who work hard, have access to an amazing tool that can expand their education! "But Mr Schleicher says the findings of the report should not be used as an "excuse" not to use technology, but as a spur to finding a more effective approach.". I think we should defiantly use technology to our advantage!

    2. I agree with Cameron. Students will mess around either way either playing with a computer or a pencil. The computer holds incredible knowledge and is an extensive learning tool for things that will help us in our career later in life and if we learn how to get the most out of the computer now then we will know how to use it for the rest of out lives.

  3. I think the argument over computer use in school is interesting. Technology skills and correct use of computers can contribute to the learning and overall life preparation of students. I believe that certain subjects should refrain from computer use however. The article says "students who use computers moderately at school, such as once or twice a week, have "somewhat better learning outcomes" than students who use computers rarely" (Coughlan). This is applicable to subjects like math, and science, where frequent computer use can inhibit the learning of skills to solve problems when just googling the answer is available. However, classes like English and History enable computer use. It lets the students collect relevant research and topics, each of which are skills that are very applicable in the real world. As the earth moves towards a more technology centered way of life, students should be becoming more prepared to work in it.

  4. I somewhat agree with this article only because they are saying that too much is not good, but once or twice a week is fine. In a recent study done by the OECD, they found that "there is no single country in which the internet is used frequently at school by a majority of students and where students' performance improved". I find as being a student myself that computers are only beneficial during appropriate times, like in history for research, English for vocabulary review, but not in subjects like math or science. Now we even use computers in PE, which does not seem right. I am sure the use of technology would increase test scores, if students were actually doing the correct work and research and not just playing games on the computer.

  5. I feel like we have a fine amount of technology in our schools, because we are able to access our assignment online and anywhere like google docs. From the words of the OECD “Investing heavily in school computers and classroom technology does not improve pupils' performance, says a global study” (OECD (BBC). I do not agree with this statement because if you look at some students tests scores around the world most of them are going up with the help of online assignments, for example Duolingo, these current event blogs, and other resources to help us reach our goal of succeeding in school. Therefore technology is helping us improve test scores in schools today.

  6. I do not agree that technology is decreasing learning and test scores. I think that it is very helpful to have it, so we can work on projects at home and at school. Also, it is important to learn how to use technology and computer software because most jobs now days require you to know how to use computers/technology. Nick Gibb says, "we want all schools to consider the needs of their pupils to determine how technology can complement the foundations of good teaching and a rigorous curriculum, so that every pupil is able to achieve their potential." I think that this statement is very accurate and technology is very helpful when it goes along with what is being taught.

  8. I feel like technology is helping kids in school today and not decreasing there learning and test scores. Kids use technology all the time to help them learn. When Nick Gibb says "we want all schools to consider the needs of their pupils to determine how technology can complement the foundations of good teaching and a rigorous curriculum, so that every pupil is able to achieve their potential." I agree with this because when technology is taught to be used the right way it is really helpful. I use technology all the time to help me learn. Using this website is an example of using technology in a way that helps me learn.

  9. I believe technology has both its advantages and disadvantages. Technology “can be a distraction and result in pupils cutting and pasting ‘prefabricated’ homework answers from the internet” (OECD). This is very true, especially now that testing can be done online. There isn’t a country where “the internet is used frequently at school by a majority of students and where students' performance improved” (OECD). Technology can be a huge benefit to students and their education if used in the correct way. Overall, technology today is imperfect, but hopefully the following years will bring us some success.

  10. I feel that technology at school has both it's advantages and disadvantages. For instance, it is very easy for kids to get distracted on computers but some kids are different than others and computers and technology help them learn. It helps some kids to do something active and exploring to learn instead of reading out of a book and taking notes on paper. In the article entitled "Computers 'do not improve' pupil results, say OECD" OECD discusses the topic of new technology in schools. OECD states, "Tom Bennett, the government's expert on pupil behaviour, said teachers had been "dazzled" by school computers" (OECD). I disagree that teachers are "dazzled" by technology because technology has been around for quite some time now, but the teachers find that technology is an easier and more efficient way to get stuff done.

  11. I disagree with the article above because with the route our society is currently in today it is very important to learn and understand how technology works. paragraph 3 states "school technology has raised to many false hopes", not everyone learns the same way some are going to benefit from using technology but others not so much. I understand technology maybe a easy way for distractions but also it may allow us to get work done more efficiently as well as being more eco-friendly by not using so much paper.

  12. In the article "Computers 'do not improve' pupil results," it talks about how using computers for schools daily is worse then using them only a little or none every week. "Those students who use tablets and computers very often tend to do worse than those who use them moderately" (Computers 'do not improve' pupil results). If this is the case then why not test it at the schools that have more tablets or laptops at them. I agree with this article because using computers daily can be distracting for a student. I have personal experience because whenever we use the tablets or laptops in any of my classes that i have them in, people always end up finding an internet game to play or go off task in a different way. All in all, computers should be at school, but not used daily. Sometimes you have to keep it old school with pencil and paper to learn more.

    1. Aidan I agree with you because it could work but it can become to much of a distraction to be able to use computers or other devices in a class room. We should stick to what we have been doing in the past and keep writing out tests and be doing book work. You should be able to learn plenty with just a textbook and doing homework out of it any day of the week as long as you are taught it in class. With all that I have said people should not be aloud to use electronic devices for schoolwork in a classroom.

  13. Technology is a great advancement is our modern world. The internet is a great resource to find out new information on various topics and keep updated with things going on in the world around us. Technology is also a good way to communicate and keep in touch with other people. Technology is useful in the classroom because on simple assignments we can save paper resources and make a google document and easily submit it to our teachers with the touch of a few buttons. There are no disadvantages to technology in the classroom. Students should be responsible enough to use these privileges wisely and if there are decreased learning responses to the addition of technology in the classroom then it's most likely being put in the hands of students who see it as a distraction rather than a learning tool. - Sabrina Shaw Per. 4

  14. I think that the idea that computers do not improve pupils scores is ridiculous. In today's generation the only way to survive is to have some common knowledge on how to use a computer or find information. The studies shown that schools with technology have "no noticeable improvement". Whats to say that there is no noticeable decrease in grades. The web can help easier find information and thus help the student write a better essay with more information.

  15. I dis agree with the article saying technology can "lower results" Technology plays a huge role in todays schools. We use computers everyday in school and the things that computers are capable of can change peoples answers and could make them smarter. Using computers at school is a great thing for kids because it mixes things up a little and changes there normal routine in the classroom.

    1. I have to agree with Bryan as that technology I believe doesn't "lower our results". If anything I believe that technology or computers would be able to raise or help our results as they can provide so much for us nowadays. I think hat getting to use computers and more advanced technology in a classroom is good for kids and teenagers now too. I think everyone should properly know how to use a computer and the technology that is available to us. It's a great way to also not use the same old pencil and paper technique and try something more current and it changes things up for the class.

  16. Computers and the ability to go online during a school day is vital for our learn and we used probably doing more of it. With how great technology is today why not use it and if we don't we may not be ready to use higher level technology when we get older. What about ICT, you have to take ICT if you are wanting to graduate from Oak Ridge High School without computers we don't even get to have that class. There are so many reason for students to have the ability to go on computers and online during school so if we limit the use of them we are limiting the learning

  18. I don't agree with that students are getting lower test scores because schools are converting to more technology. I mean, it could tire your eyes out looking at the screen for a while but all you have to do is glance up once in a while. I think that the students getting lower test scores has to do with them not studying as much as they would for a written test. Also, schools are preparing us for what the real world is going to be like. Many companies out their use computers and technology daily. When students constantly use this technology at home, I don't think it should be a problem at school.

  19. Isn't it ironic how, to see this article, one needs to be in the internet? I strongly disagree with the above article. Internet and technology helps students at school to research important topics in a matter of seconds. Sure too much screen time isn't too healthy, but a little bit a day will not hurt what so ever. As technology continues to grow, so will student's knowledge of the world around them then and now. A quote from Transformers, Age of Extinction states that "no one can stop technology."

  20. I disagree with the statement of the article for one they don't know what their doing when they say that being on the computer disadvantages the students and doesn't make a different's cause all they will do is procrastination other than do the assignment. Students will always find a way to procrastinate teachers had this problems for years upon years so this isn't a new thing even if we didn't have computers we would probably play with a pencil or play with erasers and not pay attention. At least when we have computers to our aid because they will save all our work so we cant lose any of it. It helps with lectures because the teachers can post their lecture on the computer and the students who weren't paying attention can look at that and then take notes. Computers yes they are a privilege to society and schools alike but humanity is advancing and we need to teach our children how to use the future technology that hasn't been invented yet so they will be caught up to society when we let them out of the nest.

Students can easily educate themselves and use the internet as a resource and most students have some sort of access to it. The article says "students who use computers moderately at school, such as once or twice a week, have "somewhat better learning outcomes" than students who use computers rarely" (Coughlan). This statement is accurate since there are millions of websites with different information available to anyone who looks it up. The use of technology is increasing tremendously and by the time students are out of school, there will be even more technology than before. The internet is a valuable source for students of all ages and adults as well. A majority of jobs use technology in one way or another, so it's better that we introduce it and use it now. 29. I disagree with the article’s argument on how school technology isn’t improving on student’s academic performance. My thoughts were that it really depends on the student’s way of learning. Like South Korea and Shanghai and their low usage of the school’s internet which is shown in the first diagram of the article. This tells me that their how they learn is using “Old traditional” way of studying/learning when technology wasn’t around. Some student are capable of using this method. Although not everyone can, which is why technology is a big role in some schools. Some students find it easier to study and learn online. In the article a quote caught my attention, “Students who use computers very frequently at school get worse results” than students who use computers rarely” (Computers 'do not improve' pupil results, says OECD) I can see why the first quote is very true for some students because they can be easily get off task and look at other stuff rather than doing or studying their work. The article also says how technology isn’t improving on math, reading and science. Even though it’s happening that isn’t a good reason to get rid of it. Technology at school can make it easier for students to do project, or for students who want to learn more about digital art, a perfect example of this is in the article and it says “Singapore, with only a moderate use of technology in school, is top for digital skills” (Computers 'do not improve' pupil results, says OECD).

For example, using computers for math and science does not make much sense and may not be very helpful.  In addition, in english and history, I believe it can be helpful if used correctly.  Also, too much computer use can be detrimental and as the article says, "Those students who use tablets and computers very often tend to do worse than those who use them moderately.”  And I agree that it can affect scores because they are not learning the material, but instead they are just accumulating answers from the internet. 32. I do not agree with the article's argument at all. From personal experience, I think that computers can make a classroom more interactive and fun rather than listening to a lecture/taking notes for a whole class period. It can give everyone in the classroom to be engaged at the same time, and if there are students that are wasting their time surfing the net then that is their loss from taking away from their learning. These are most likely some of the same students who would be unfocused during a lecture/lesson anyways so I do not believe it is much of a loss for the teachers or other students participating. Not only are the skills children are developing from these computers useful for learning they are as well preparing them for jobs in the future as Hugh Milward states, ""The internet gives any student access to the sum of human knowledge, 3D printing brings advanced manufacturing capabilities to your desktop, and the next FTSE 100 business might just as well be built in a bedroom in Coventry as in the City". The students' ability to understand and properly use the technology which is given to them is their own responsibility. 43. In today's society, technology plays a big role in student's lives. This article states that computers are causing grades to go down but computers could be making grades go up. With computers, students have a resource to information and news they can use for reports or projects. It also can have online textbooks which saves them money and also is easier to access in case a student forgets his or her book.

  44. Computers help students everyday. They supply us with information that we need. They make learning easy for the students, and for the teavhers. Sometimes they are a distraction, but overall, they are an advantage.

  45. I agree with Jaden. They are stating that computers are a negative impact on students in and at school but that its not the computers faults, its the students. These studens are chosing to mess around and use the school computers for nonrelated things but there are also students who use them wisely. Weather school have computers or not, studens will find ways to mess around that could effect their grade.

    1. I agree. Computers at school can be a wonderful and useful resource. Whether or not students use them wisely is the choice of the student himself. Many students use computers for their intended purpose.

  46. In this article, the main focus was on all of the negative things about computers not about computers helping in schools. I honestly think that computers make classrooms more interactive because of what you can do with them. There are those certain people that decide not to do their work, and mess around on the computers or play games. Its purely their fault if it doesn't help them in learning.

  47. This article only addresses the argument that, "Students who use computers very frequently at school get worse results" (Computers 'do not improve' pupil results, says OECD). However, being a student that uses computers in school on a daily basis, I find the format to be very organized and interactive. Students can access information a lot faster than looking it up in books, and the internet is a great resource. Teachers can make websites for their students with calendars and documents to save paper. Having computers in school is very helpful and agreat resource for high school students.

  48. I agree with what most of this article said. But I also believe that computers can help a learning environment; its all about the student who is using them. If a student isn't motivated, is lazy, and doesn't work hard, using or not using a computer isn't going to change that. However, if a student is motivated, then a computer can be a powerful, and helpful tool.

  49. "Those students who use tablets and computers very often tend to do worse than those who use them moderately." The article just talks about negatives of the computers in classrooms, but in actuality they help the teacher and the computers make grading and doing work faster and easier for students. They say it is bad for your eyes, but if you stare at anything for too long it would hurt your eyes.

  50. I think this artical focused too much on the negitive thing about computers than about all the positive aspects that vthey can bring to teaching students. They say that the computers are bad for your eyes but many of us spend a longer time staring at our phone screens. I think that computers bring too many benifits not to have as a recorce.

  51. I disagree with a lot of things about this article. I think they were showing a lot of negatives things about this article and none of the benefits of having technology in class. Yes, looking at a screen all day probably is not good for your eyes, but technology has really helped students in getting the grades that they want. Chromebooks are very important for research and doing projects. SmartBoards are important for teaching lessons and looking up information.

  52. The article talks a lot about the downsides to computer usage in classrooms but not that much about how beneficial they are. In many jobs, the employees will be expected to use computers so students should be taught how to use them well. In classes, we should not depend on them but they do make things easier and faster. If used for specifically class work, and not for playing games, computers in classroom could be a great tool whether it be calculations, research, or anything else.

  53. I believe that there is no need to teach using computers. Schools should show us basic use of technology. However, I do not believe that they should be trying to educate people with it.

  54. I know that during this age, computers are going to be a huge part of our life. It is needed to know in our life the functions of a computer because they can help you with so many things. But we should limit the use of computers in the classroom because "Investing heavily in school computers and classroom technology does not improve pupils performance" (OECD). Computers are an important part of our life but they shouldn't be our whole life.

  55. I do and I don't agree with this article. Using computers in school is not for everybody. There are some advantages of having this kind of technology in schools such as not listening to an instructor during the whole class. With computers, students will most likely not fall asleep or set their minds somewhere else as if a teacher were talking. There are also some disadvantages such as students using the internet for reasons that are off topic. Also, they will be fascinated by fooling around rather than doing school work on the computer. Because our generation has grown up with technology, we find it easier to access technology for our school work. But some students would forget more if they have work on the computer rather than on paper. Overall, I agree and disagree that technology doesn't help our school studies.

    1. I agree with Matt, using electronic devices, such as laptops or desktops, is not for everybody. The advantages are high though, it teaches students to be independent and work by themselves and go at their own pace of learning, unlike having a teacher go through a whole lesson or have to show their students how to do the work step-by-step, which can be boring, and forgetful knowledge. Our generation is structured by technology, and the market for it keeps growing and growing. Yes, students can get a bit off task by messing around or searching random stuff to kill time, or pretend like their learning, the article is a 50/50, it has its advantages and some disadvantages, but in all it helps keep students organized instead of writing in notebooks or on a piece of paper that could potentially be damaged, and/or lost.

  56. this information is very odd i always thought that the internet in school helped with work and helped to make things easier. "The countries and cities with the lowest use of the internet in school - South Korea, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Japan - are among the top performers in international tests." the quote says that the school average is very low in many places that have the internet.

  57. In this article saying people get sidetracked that is true I get sidetracked all the time. Not everyone gets sidetracked on the computer so a couple spoiled apples in the bin ruin it. I feel that online people make amazing things with technology and students and teacher except those high expectations on them.

  58. I agree and disagree with this article. There is a downfall in having technology in the class room. Most students likely get distracted once on the device. When on a laptop or desktop, etc. There are so many ways to get distracted mostly from the internet because the internet is endless. On the other hand there also is a positive affect on having technology in classroom. Students will likely get work done more efficient because instead of finding a page in a textbook they can lookup the information from a click of a button. This generation and the future is built on technology. Even if people tried to stop technology from being in education it wont go far. Thats all the future is and going back to dictionaries and textbooks wont take off like it did years ago.

  59. I can not decide whether to agree or disagree with this article, technology is a huge help in school, it helps learn hands or and it keeps focus, yet, I do agree with the fact that it could decrease learning, and I think that no matter what you do students will get distracted, electronics and social media are taking a big toll on the students are age, which is what our generation is building around. I believe that if a student is notorious for messing around and staying of task, that is what they are going to do. Overall, this is a article that has me at 50/50 and I can not choose a side.

  60. Technology dose not decrease learning. It is a more time efficient way to find info, study, and interact with other students and teachers. And kids can procrastinate any way they want they don't need a computer to do it most kids have cell phones anyways, I think taking away computers would be a great disadvantage.

  61. Technology is a very effective way to learn. The problem with education is that one way does no work for all. Technology might work really well with one student but might work terrible with another one. So in stead of trying to get rid of ways for students to learn, we should continue to add different angles to the education system.

  62. When students become accustomed to using technology constantly instead of using it sparingly, they perform awful when it isn't present. Education systems have evolved to make students obsessed, even reliant on tech to get the job done for them. The internet can be monumentally helpful, but also a hinderance when it isn't present
